Concorde loses part of rudder in air, lands safely
Thu February 27, 2003 10:37 AM ET
PARIS, Feb 27 (Reuters) - An Air France AIRF.PA supersonic Concorde airliner bound for New York lost a piece of its rudder in flight on Thursday, but still landed safely and on time at its destination, the airline said in a statement.

Air France said a technical investigation was under way.

The incident comes a week after an Air France Concorde on the same route made an emergency landing in Canada after one of its engines malfunctioned.

Air France and British Airways BAY.L -- the only airlines to operate the supersonic jets -- grounded their Concorde fleets after an Air France Concorde crashed on take-off from Paris on July 25, 2000, killing 113 people.

An investigation concluded a burst tyre had ruptured a fuel tank and flights resumed in November 2001 after modifications were made to avoid a repetition of the accident.

The Concorde entered service in 1976 and Air France and British Airways have 12 of the planes still flying in total.
