Just wondering how life as a commuter is at Chautauqua, Xjet, or Comair?
Don't have the option to move cause of the wife and haven't quite given up on a flying career yet. Commute would be from Michigan

DTW-CLE probably pretty easy. once you get off reserve (5months or so) wouldnt be all that bad. reserve would suck but theres movement at the fastest it can be so...this is XJT im talking about. Isnt there an airline hiring based out of DTW hiring street captains? maybe a better fit

Even the easy one leg commutes wear you down quickly. I've gone from DTW to CLE several times, it wasn't too hard. It was all I knew in the beginning so I didn't have anything to compare it to. Now that I'm based in the city I live in, I wouldn't go back to commuting long term for anything. I'll pack the stuff up and move on before I live that way again. You gotta do what you gotta do, just make sure you leave yourself 1 last ditch backup (not the flight you're actually on). Have fun.

Smacktard is right. Im based where I live now and its like night and day. If your bound to where you live now I would look for an airline that is hiring there. It'll make you life and marriage a lot easier...and quite possibly longer.:)

This is sooo true! But if you can't help it whatever you do, don't do a two leg off line... I'm ready to shoot myself, jacksonville to chicago.

Sometimes it worth the commute. I commute to DFW and you could not catch me dead driving in or out of that frickin metroplex day in and day driving out would kill me in this, let alone my wife.

Umm you do know that Air Wisconsin flies this route 3 or 4 times a day and we take unlimited jumpseaters (unless you are with AA). Just trying to help out a fellow commuter.

Considering that 40-50% of pilots and flight attendants commute, it shows that it isn't all bad. Sure, living in base has its obvious advantages, but at the same time, you couldn't pay me enough to move to EWR or CLE. I love where I live (setting, family, etc) so to me the commute is a worth the tradeoff.

And to put this into another perspective, I got off a trip recently with a captain who lived in CT. He figured with traffic it would take him 2 hours to get home, plus the $20 or so in tolls. Meanwhile, I got off my plane, walked to the next gate and got on my commute flight home. I bet he and I got home about the same time. Granted, I got lucky, but it's definitely doable.

I will agree with the previous poster's statement to look for a base that just has a one-leg commute, especially if you can keep it to an hour or an hour-and-a-half. Two-leg commutes would be a ball-buster.

Good luck.
