Just got offered an interview at republic but would be living in Chicago... is it true that most if not all trips at republic are not commutable? Im guessing the closest place would be Indy.

got the eagle job all lined up... Skywest didn't like me for now:bawling: but I think I may try again in 6 months. The upgrade time looks better at REP but I guess I shouldn't go chasing that.

Shuttle America does have an ORD base but it's pretty senior on the FO side. Depending on what company they put you in commuting can be an issue. S5 is not very commuter friendly.

S5 is Shuttle America, one of the three certificates owned by Republic Airways Holdings

If you're under one year seniority at Shuttle, the ORD base may as well not exist. And most of the trips in Indy are real early morning shows and late night finishes.

Sounds about right. Spoke with a CHQ FO last week in ATL. He interviewed with CHQ hoping to get based in his home city which happened to be a CHQ base. He ended up getting the offer and said he was told by the interviewers that he would get based in his home city. He double commutes now to get to IND for Shuttle America.

Felt sorry for the guy. Commuting is bad enough, making it a double commute sounds pretty bad.

Your Rep bases are IND, PIT and DCA. The commutability of trips are directly related to how senior you are.

yeah theyve been doing that alot lately....good buddy of mine was originally assigned a 145 class and was stoked bc he wanted SDF....got the call a week later saying they were switching all of them to Shuttle....SOL on the Louisville base....needless to say he didnt want to wait another 3 or 4 weeks for the next 145 class.

If you are offered Republic only, your best bets would be either to drive to Indy, or commute to DCA. DCA trips are mostly commutable on one end, and some trips that are commutable on both ends are passed up regularly by senior guys. I haven't bought a hotel room in almost 8 months now in DCA, and I am not that senior.

Also, Denver may be an option for you...should be an easy commute on United. Denver trips kinda suck right now as things wind up, but it is supposed to improve as aircraft are added out there. Either way, get a number and worry about getting into a choice base later. Good luck!

but if he lives in base, who cares

good luck on your upcoming interview flyboy.

hope you get Shuttle America so you can be based at ORD.

Even living in base, it'd be nice to finish a trip while it was still daylight outside and there was time left to do something with the evening.

well.. I hate to do this as I'm sure I'll catch some flack but I don't meet the 23 EMB170 rule so I don't think Shuttle America would be an option...correct? and no my hair isn't spiked and I don't care if I fly a shiny jet!

I live just south of Chicago, and just drive to IND. It's not that bad, good company to start off with. Good luck.

Republic is not holding steady on their 23 yr old rule for the 170. I just had a friend hired into the 170 at S5, 21 yrs old 700 hrs TT and 100+ multi. True story.

Even though seniority is everything in this business...I personally would have given up a month's worth of seniority if it meant I would be based where I lived. Another 20-30 numbers isn't worth a commute IMO.

very good point, might be worth his while to hold out....also I have a buddy who is under 23 and was just assigned an S5 class as well....so thats correct, they arent holding to that age 23 rule. What I dont know is whether or not they are still requiring the 500 x country and the 300 instrument time.

I agree with boiler, DON'T commute unless you absolutely have to. Your life will be so much less stressful and you'll spend a lot more time at home, instead of a crowded airport terminal. Plus, you won't have to wase money on a crashpad, extra car, etc. I'd take living in base over a fast upgrade any day.

so you are saying that it would be better to take the eagle job I have set up vs. trying to get on at REP? I mean I could interview and tell them that I want Shuttle so I could get ORD eventually... would they let someone hold out for 1 of the 3 companies?

I'm biased because I need more people coming to ORD so I can actually drop trips again... but I'd take the sure ORD thing with Eagle where you're guaranteed the base of your choice. Bird in the hand and all that. Upgrade should drop to about 4 years for newhires if I was a betting man, which I am.

I guess it depends on your situation, and that's a decision you'll have to make for yourself. If you're a single guy and you don't have anyone special that you like to see on a regular basis, then yeah, commuting for a while might be worth it for a possible faster upgrade and a possible eventual base at home someday. If you have a family though, or even a serious significant other, commuting will severely limit the time you will get to see them.

Nobody knows whats going to happen in this industry with everything that is going on. I just wouldn't count on the growth of a company to get me to where I would be the happiest. You might get stuck somewhere you don't want to be when the music stops.
