Anyone out there flying for CommutAir? You happy? Good company? Good lines? I'm applying and wanted to see what I was getting myself into. I have heard it's a great place to build some time. Thanks in advance for any post.:)
 
I applied with them last night. Not sure if I'd take the job if offered, but thought applying couldn't hurt.....
 
I don't know much about Commutair, but you guys should apply to Colgan. We are growing and I spoke with our Chief pilot yesterday and was told we were getting new flying in CLE and BOS for CO by the end of the summer. We are getting 20 new Saabs for this flying and upgrade will be under a year.
 
I left there about 6 months ago. At the time, the people were really great, the lines (out of CLE) were extremely commutable, and the company was sorta floundering. I left because of pay and lack of a retirement plan. Looking at it from the other side, many things about CommutAir were nice. Working for a small company where everyone knows your name is good, and like I said the trips were commutable from CLE. Since there is no training contract, you can leave anytime you want.

1- Apply

2- Get hired

3- Get 121 FO qualified

4- The next day, apply to other regionals

5- Be polite and say "See Ya"

6- Get hired somewhere else with better pay, benefits and union rep.

How does Colgan expect to be in CLE and BOS if the can't even operate IAH without screwing it. Continental isn't that stupid. Keep on dreaming.

I did what LaxPilot recommended. worked well for me. I only spent about 7 months at CA and it allowed me to get somewhere better. The 121 turbine time is valuable and any future employer will appreciate you more for having the experience than if you had none.

Well, I got a call for an interview.. Hmmm.. I may go for the experience, but hold out for SkyWest or Express...

I find your attitude disrespectful. There can't be too many folks who applied to CommutAir and got an interview on the dates you posted. Perhaps we can get your interview cancelled and save us the trouble of flying you to Plattsburgh and talking to you.

Do they count Glider and RW time as total? Are upgrades still arond 12-15 months?

Obviously from my TT at present I'm quite aways off from this, but I'm curious how the schedules work at CA- since their routes all look like out & backs, are you home at night or do you end up on 3-4 day overnights like on most other regionals?
 
2, 3, and 4-day overnights, typically. A few same-day trips are available, but they're rare.

And now that our huge operation in Albany has been gutted and moved to Boston, but still crewed from Albany, you get to start and end each of those overnight trips with an unpaid deadhead followed (or following) a multi-hour unpaid sit.

It's great. :D

Kinda?? you mean really like Waldo, or Harry Potter... sorry WOZ... NO He left quite some time ago he got Jet eyes. I know his email. email me through this board and I'll forward it to him...

As far as Commutair goes, Its a good place to work. For an Airline its a stable job, good people, easy schedules aka commutable, still relatively quick upgrades, management is approachable, and for the most part willing to help anyone out in a bind. Also its a small everyone knows everyone company. Like always cabin class are always around each corner...

With that being said no place is perfect we can all find something to complain about "rant if you please", but ours are mainly lack of pay, poor communication, and yes it is a little plane and no its not wind up.

A message to all CommutAir applicants:



Don't come to CommutAir and get a few hundred hours just to skip out and fly a jet. If you do I will hunt you down and beat the $11,000 bucks out of you we spent to train you. Do not take advantage of us not having a training contract. Suck it up, be a CFI for a few more months, skip CommutAir and fly a small jet for 5 years in the right seat. That is just a bit of advice.

Most of the people I know who have left after a few months here all came with the intention of staying on and upgrading. Then when they got here, they realized that the company doesn't live up to its promises, that there hasn't been an upgrade class since they got here (just some captain-qualified guys who waited almost a year before actually getting "upgraded"), and that if they're going to be stuck as FOs for a while, why wouldn't they want to do it in something that actually gets heat in the morning?

People are leaving because CommutAir management refuses to make this a livable place to work. In the past year, we've gone to charging our employees another ~$900/year for family medical care, lost the on-time bonus that added $2000/year gross, gone to schedules that have gotten worse and worse, closed yet another domicile, and on and on.

So don't for a minute give me any sanctimonious BS about people "using CommutAir." We're the ones being "used." When a company has turnover as high as ours, in a job market that's as dismal as it is, the problem's not with the applicants, it's with the company and the way it treats its pilots. That should be plainly obvious.

We'll see...... all of these airlines have issues, pick your poison. Thanks to all that have post, I appreciate all the input, Lord knows I could use all the advice I can get.

Dude, not to be a dick but do you really thing your ready to be pic 121 with 800TT? And with Beech time where are you going to go? There are CA at every airline that are looking to move on but the market hard to break.

No, your not being a dick. I never said I was ready to be PIC in a 121 environment. All I was saying is if I go to a regional that is flying some props for less wage, I would hope for and expect a faster upgrade time. After flying FO for 2 years at an average of 75 hours a month = 1800 hours, in type. Probably able to pass a 121 Check as PIC. Verse going to Xjt where the upgrade is looking closer to 4-5 years for the new hires.

Yeah, but the small jet guy,

1. Makes more
2. Has better QOL
3. Has more stable employment

If an RJ is "small" then what the F is the beech?

Wow, now that I read that I can see why you're so bitter. Wait, you were that bitter 3 years ago, so that can't be it. Dam, I thought I was really on to something!

So, again, when are you going to get a real job?;)
