Comair time on reserve??

Maybe Colgan and ASA are worse, but there aren't many more.

Seems like in about the time it takes a Comair new hire to get off reserve, a Beech new hire at Colgan will have been holding a line, been home every night, acquired 2 type ratings, and have over 1000 PIC ....

Yea Colgan sounds a lot worse ....

Perhaps the reserve system is "mismanaged", but contractually it compares very favorably with all but a few airlines.

which is about all you can afford working at Colgan.....I worked there and now I make more than a Sabb CA as an FO at CMR. It was all about quality of life.

Saab CA payscale at Colgan is bout a dollar more per hour than your CRJ700 FO payscale ...

I guess it all depends on what your goals are, how fast you want to achieve them, and how comfy you are where you are ... QOL is pretty good for me and a lot of my friends here at Colgan, pay can definetly get better but unless you live in Bar Harbor, Maine or such, Colgan is not a place many of us will retire on ...

When you count perdiem (at $1.75/hr) whenever you're away from base (any time you step into the cockpit), plus the ability to pick up trips at 1.5X (premium pay), you see where there is no comparison.

You're absolutely correct though, it does depend on what your ultimate goals are, and where you feel you need to be in order to achieve them.

By the way, I saw one of the C model B190's in LGA the other day. Those things still supposed to be gone by 3/1?

Dude those C models are like roaches ... just dont die ... The all white one is halfway out the door, looks like it's in Hyannis awaiting it's flight to Oklahoma. The one that's in USAirways colors came back from being supposedly taken out of service, and the one in the famous stars n stripes colors is owned by Colgan and rumored to be turned into our very own cargo machine. Heard they're gonna take the seats out and use it to ferry parts down to Houston, you bet I'll be signing up for those flights ... those C models, as crappy as they look, they're a pilots plane, just not meant to carry paying passangers around tho ...

Reserve in Orlando was great, I did that for nine months. Line holder in Orlando was even better, I did that for two plus years (not including the 89 days)
I did one month up here and swore i would never sit reserve these bast@rds again.

Dude, I wasn't trying to flame your airline. I saw them land a saab in garbage conditions in LGA, with right engine feathered. Or shall I say coarsened? We landed about an hour before and it was +/-15-20 all the way down in showers on RWY, pretty darn bumpy with about 22kt x-wind component (at the time we landed) on ils 22. I was impressed. You guys do a good job. I just thought that guy who said comair reserve was good came from colgan based on previous postings.

Heck, if I didn't have kids and bills to pay and there was actually a shot at going to a major or something that closely resembles a major that I would consider going to , I would go there too, provided I lived east of the mississippi. I was just scared of getting stuck, like many are, at a place that didn't fit me well.

Everybody needs to find a good fit for them, and tough it through these tough years. Someday it will be fairly attainable for all of us to go where we want to go and call it a career.

I still say comair reserve sucks, and unlike other people of this board I actually have others to compare it too. Reserve sucks wherever you are, anybody who says otherwise is bullshtting you. It's called toughing it out and paying your dues. I sure would hate to pay 10 grand or 40 grand at the academy to go through comair reserve. Again, no flame, but I bet that was one heck of a wake up call. "Here is your loan application, and your QofL for the next year. Enjoy!"

Rumor has it that CMR will open a JFK base?

Last I hear they've turned down that idea because it would be staffed almost entirely with commuters, eliminating one of the major benefits of opening the base.

Why is reserve at CMR so bad ? I've had bout 8 days of reserve at Colgan since I started over 6 months ago and got activated four times out of that. The only time it sucked was doing Hot reserve sitting around the plane in a hangar all day, but that was only once.

I just wanna know what makes ur reserve so bad and is it like that at places like CHQ and AWAC ?

Reserve is not so bad at CMR. If you go into it thinking that it will be...you can bet you'll be miserable. It's all in your mindset. I've sat reserve here for well over 3 years (as an FO and Captain). Many folks have already madeup their minds that they'll be miserable on reserve and guess what, they are! Many of those I've sat reserve with have made peace with the reserve system and as such it's reflected in their more positive attitude making their lives and those around them much easier to bare.


If you have a reserve window that opens at 4am...know that you'll get paged at 4am and plan accordingly. IF you're junior on reserve accept the fact that you'll fly a lot. If you're senior, you probably won't unless you bid to fly.

Interesting ... some of my buddies that got stuck with lots of reserve the first few months were upset because they were sitting at home and not flying. I don't think anyone would stay at Colgan if we had tons of reserve, it would make being here pretty pointless since 99% of us are here to get the time ...

4am pages ? ouch, at least here they tell us the night before and only call us if they need us. Plus it's pretty easy to sit reserve at home (not crashpad) if you live near a major airport in the northeast.

You're right though it's all about the attitude you bring to the game ...

I guess what I was saying was "plan for and expect the worst and hope for the best". Usually you can look up your schedule the night before (usually around 10pm or so) and see a trip posted on your line.
