I was recently speaking with a Comair F/A who is pregnant with her third child...though you wouldn't know it by looking at her. When is ASA gonna adopt Comair/Skywest F/A hiring guidelines?

But I digress.

Anyway, I asked he how she manages 2+ children while working as an F/A. She answered that her hubby is a stay-at-home dad, and that she also bids "high-speed" lines. I feigned understanding in the interest of looking intelligent ( :D ), but that term is unfamiliar to me. What are they?

"High Speed" lines are continuous duty overnights. You go on duty in the evening, fly the last flight of the night to the outstation where you go to the hotel for a few hours of sleep (3-6 hours on the average) then return to the airport to fly the first flight out in the morning back to the domicile. Crews are on duty the whole time but are allowed a few hours at the hotel for a cat nap. They're called high speeds because they are usually flown at max forward speed to increase hotel time. They're sometimes referred to as "stand up's" because you sleep while standing up. Some people love them, some hate them. I don't love them.

Ah! That was all I needed. Yeah, I know what COD's are. (We call 'em "naps.")

Every airline has to come up with their own term to act like they invented the things.

Highspeeds
CDO's
Stand ups
Illegals

Any others?

Why would they call them ILLEGALS?

Hey, ASA people!

Has anyone else heard the buzz around the ramp that the company is actually considering constructing nap line with 3 naps, 3 full days off? I know this probably more "The ATRs will be in MCO next month" crap, but if nap lines were to become 3/3, I'd be there in a heartbeat.

So, am I the only gullible person on ramp 3 or has anyone else overhead this little gem of a story?

I wouldn't count on it. That would mean they are trying to improve our QOL, and we all know that's not happening.

I don't have it handy but I rec'd a newletter from our MEC recently highlighting the flagrant violations of the contract that ASA has undertaken and I seem to remember something about the company taking the position that they are not required to give us 2 days off after 3 naps, despite the contract. I could be wrong about where I read this but I have no trouble believing it. They quoted a management type as saying that in many cases it was to the company's advantage to violate the contract and deal with a grievance rather than to honor the contract. :mad: There's also some interesting info about the actions and comments of a former (I believe) Assistant VP of Flight Ops that illustrates the animosity Mgm't feels towards the pilot group. Not a pretty picture.

It's gonna get ugly at ASA.

Because they have less than 8 hours of rest.

You wouldn't need 8 full hours of rest becaue you havent fullfilled a 24 hour duty period.
6 PM report for work
7-10PM Flight
1 hr trasnport to hotel
11-4 AM Hotel
5 AM show
8 AM done

booyah grandma
PS. I have no experience in this kind of flying and am talking completely out of my arse and my Far-Aim which I keep on my desk as I am a bored flight student in a small southwestern city 1000 miles from my friends and family, and too young to go to the bar!
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SOMEONE HELP ME!

I understand that. I didn't make up the term, just relating why the term is used at some airlines( esp NWA).

they can't have 8 hours of rest. You get your 9 hours or 8 hours reduced in the previous 24 hours just like everybody else, you just don't have to be AT work the whole night. So what you are saying is that you would rather spend the rest of the evening pacing the airport lobby as opposed to getting some time in hotel, with a hot shower and airconditioned or heated room?

Look at it as being paid to nap. It's all perspective brother.

You think it's gonna get ugly at ASA? I don't think it will ever get as ugly as it did at Comair. But, don't worry, the Comair guys will be behind you if it does. Good luck guys.

CDO = Continuous Duty Overnight

...but on the pairings, it says...

COD = Crew On Duty

That's what I was talking about.
