Delta president Ed Bastian said in a news conference this morning at CVG that Comair will be a very important part of Delta after the merger is complete.

He noted that Comair's CRJ 900s coming on line in the next year will be an intricate part to domestic operations and he sees Comair as a "growth vehicle" for increased DCI flying.

Bastian said that the combined airline would not close Delta's second-largest hub at Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky Regional Airport and would not lay off employees locally. Bastain said the only cuts would be at the corporate headquarters in Atlanta and Minneapolis.

Experts have said additional cuts for the new airline will likely have to come somewhere, as Northwest has hubs in Detroit and Memphis, both relatively close to Cincinnati.


Bastain said it's likely that international service from Cincinnati will increase after the merger is complete. He said that of 1,100 flights the two airlines currently have, only four are direct competitors and will be affected.



Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear said he felt good about meeting with Delta but had to be "cautiously optimistic".

Thats great except for the fact that Anderson has stated the resultant airline will have roughly 600 regional aircraft. NW/DL currently have roughly 800. Chopping 200 RJs doesn't sound like growth to me...
 
of course, it's easy to become a growth vehicle after having 1/3rd of the airline chopped off over the last few years.

He's probably one of the only elected officials in the country who's poll numbers are in as much free fall as GWB.......

He is trying to get people to sign onto this turd of a deal so he is blowing sunshine up peoples arsses. Truth the shrinking will come. Hopefully Some will gain and those that lose I feel for you.
 
Great for Comair. ASA just announced that hiring and upgrading will halt as of May 5, no additional growth, with ATR's leaving and all ATR pilots transitioning to Jet.
 
80% of all DCI flying in ATL for the next 12 years. If we meet the completion and A14 goals.

comair will be receiving an additional 5-6% increase in block hours over projected summer numbers and redistributing flying to over 50% operations in the northeast.

Of the 14 50 seaters that they announced would be going away 5-7 of those aircraft will be kept.


They are trying to sell this as growth. But by my math we we were supposed to loose 14 a/c and now we are only going to loose 7. Great way for management to fool the employees while still shrinking.
 
Good point Med, and you are right. However, if Delta decreases all flying in ATL, then ASA's 80% can be decreased too, and still meet the 80%. I agree that the sky is not falling, but changes are afoot, and ASA has in fact announced that hiring/upgrades are finished next month, and all the ATR pilots will move to the jet. (Which we knew), with no replacement Aircraft, like we all assumed or hoped there would be!

That cannot be great news, nor that the Delta and NWA big cheeses have claimed that Comapss, Mesaba, and Comair will be the new 'Golden Childs'.

It looks like lean times ahead for ASA.
 
The ASA 80% flying out of ATL deal is worthless.
  1. It protects SkyWest, Inc., not ASA. ASA pilots have no right to go after Delta if they believe the percentage is below 80% (and it is currently, but only if you don't include SkyWest flights).
  2. Because of that, if Jerry decided to fly more SkyWest flights out of ATL, the 80% number would be complied with even though ASA wasn't actually doing the flying.
  3. ASA is moving to having more flights out of MCO and CVG. This is not only because of the loss of the F8 flying, but also a push from management to get our performance stats up by spreading the love away from ATL a bit.
  4. In the coming months you will see Comair, SkyWest, and Pinnacle increase their flying out of ATL as our 50-seat aircraft are spread out to MCO and CVG. Remember when DFW was built up and it was nearly an ASA ghost town in ATL?
  5. ASA is a primarily 50-seat airline, with a handful of 70s that don't have first class seats. Delta is moving to a much greater role of the 76-seat product with first class. As ATL is their biggest hub, the largest percentage of the 76-seat aircraft will be flying out of here... every one of them not flown by ASA.

Totally agree, its sad. You would think somebody in the Media would have the courage to ask these CEO's if they want to put it in writing "there will be no lay-offs or down sizing"

Once this merger is signed off I guarantee ya the Leaders of Delta are going to say "Well since Oil is still $115 a barrel we can't go forward with our plan of keeping every hub, so let the down sizing begin" I guess we can only just wait and see.

Can you imagine if they said this...
"We expect that our merger will result in a 20% reduction which will allow us to cut payroll of the new combined airline by 33%, yet allow us to create a dominate presence that will intimidate all new startups, force other LCC's to sell or liquidate, etc.

Yeah, the state of Minnesota tried this with NWA back in 1991, but of course NWA found a way out of it....
