I've recently been awarded a flight slot for a local reserve unit and I failed the color vision test. I was wondering if anyone had any advice. I don't have a SODA for my FAA medical but I did need an alternative color vision test to pass. Thanks

The military will not waive color vision for Flying Class 1 physicals. I know this the hard way....had a UPT slot for the DCANG 121 FS flying Vipers and was DQ'd for the very same issue. I looked into everything. Unless you can get an ETP (very very difficult....might need Bush as a father), you won't be flying in the military anytime soon. However, make sure the vision test was given under the proper conditions and lighting using a new book of plates. That will help.

Thanks for the info. I've been looking into this alot. Made alot of phone calls to alot of people with no positive results. I've heard the army is a little more lenient on waivers so I might try to pursue that option. Any other info would be great!

Sorry there is no “waiver” for color-blindness, but there is always the ETP route -- It depends how bad you really want it, and how bad they really want to give it to you. For myself, I would fight to the death!

Here you go, there is some very useful information in these two posts. I hope it helps.

Color-Blindness ;ETP

Color-blindness; ETP

FYI: “a lot” (2 words) ;)

I know a guy who failed the CV test and was told he would never fly for the AF. He served in an ANG fighter unit for over 8 years flying the F-4 and A-7. He may have received an ETP but I will check.

Later on in his career, he was told he would never be accepted to FWS as a part-timer. In 1985, he made it into FWS and won the Top Gun trophy for his class. First part-timer to ever do so.

Point is, don't give up, and as jkarl1 said, fight it to the death!

Thanks for all the positive responses. I am definitly not giving up yet. I will ask the base about the ETP process.

Great Story Bullseye! LOL

I would of loved to seen the expresion on those people's face ( who told him he couldn't) when he accomplished all that.

There was a guy in my SUPT class who had really bad vision, i dont remember what it was, but he went to brooks, and they told him hed never fly, not even as a nav. Well, he got a waiver, this dude wore coke bottles, and hes flying eagles now. get a waiver, its just a matter of who you talk to.

Good luck
