Howdy,

I went on my first solo cross country today (just got back) to CLL (College Station). It was "Tweet city" there today!! I assume that the tweets were out of Laughlin. Who uses the call signs "Rasta 5x"? I was just wondering. If anything got me motivated to get my liscense in the shortest amount of time possible, it was that. Just a few more hours until I am able to take the checkride!! Then my package will be nearly complete!!

Any info on the Tweets would be much appreciated.

What was in college station?

One of the best burrito joints in Texas - I think the name was Freebird's, but it's been so long I can't remember. That was the main reason most Tweet IPs went O&B there.

Freebird's is the only reason to fly to College Station. Well, and it's the only airport where you can fly a DME Arc in the area. Austin just got a Freebird's about a year ago, so I don't fly to CLL anymore. Too many Aggies there.

No, No, No

Freebirds is good, I must agree.....however if your ever in Denton TX place called Hooya's...pretty good burritos....I sure could go for one now

Holicks

In the same shopping center as Freebirds is a place called Holick's Graphics. They are the makers of the Shiney name tags. They also make leather and cloth ones.

Good service from those guys. There is also a great amount of Eye Candy at CLL.

1st of the 9th son, Air Cav-Air Mobile.

Back in my Lt. days I used to fly low approaches in the F-4 at CLL. You know, to motivate the Tweet students.:cool: I remember how close the football stadium was to the airport.

There is a good chance you won't fly the Tweet. But if you do, many of us will tell you all about it.

Freebird's was always good, but when I was down that way I usually went over to Lake Charles for the crawfish etoufe. If you called the FBO on the way in they'd usually have it waiting for you when you landed.

Now that was some good eatin'!!!

Freebirds is awesome! I went there with my CFI back in August. You talk about a fun trip home, sitting in a 172 with your @ss about to explode and it's a hundred degrees!! They have a Freebirds in Houston now too, so I don't have to see Aggies in College Station or "dirty socialists" in Austin. We go to CLL for x-countries because it is hard to get lost, there is the Navasota VOR in between my "trailer park" airport and CLL. Worse comes to worse, you could just bend south and pick up Hwy. 290. Anyways, nearly done now, just a few hours left until checkride time!!

Talking about good Chow

Yeah. CWF Chenault Field has a pretty good deal. A good menu and it is only a buck. not too far away is a place called Acadian Regional ARA it is 12 miles from Lafayette and the FBO owner is a good cajun and cooks something different everyday. Also not too far from CLL is DWH (David Wayne Hooks) a nice size corporate type airport. It has a full service rest. at the FBO. again fill up and eat for a buck.

I am sure alot of people have this link already but here goes..

AEX

I'll agree that Chennault is good cajun and very convenient, but the best cajun food in the U.S. is found at Alexandria, LA, AEX (old England AFB). It is off the airfield at a place called the Cajun Landing. The FBO will give you a $10 coupon if you buy enough petrol and a courtesy car to get there. Nothing on the menu is below excellent.

If you are looking for good restaraunts (sp) ask a T-1 IP. All those out and backs do wonders for the waistline. At least I don't have to fit back into my G-suit after lunch anymore.

Cajun Landing

Yeah buddy....,

- AEX--CAJUN LANDING if you have the turn time...
- CWF-- if you need a quick turn + GREAT FOOD for 1$...
(and don't forget the free Dove Bars)

Ah yes,... graduated from the T-1 "LUNCH & BACK" Program--on to advanced studies in CREW FOOD compliments of NETJETS!

(Have any recommendations for a health club membership?...will probably NEED that exercise during the road trips!)

Years ago, in my single days, I was totally infatuated with a girl who used to work at Freebirds. Every chance I got, I took an ACE T-37 X-country there, just to see her (and eat a burrito, of course). Of course, she wasn't very interested in me, and it went nowhere. I wish I could remember her name!

Those were the days.

Hey KC-10 Driver,

- Where'd you fly "Steam Jet" -135s + Tweet Ace?...I did some of that in the early 80's at PBG...do you remember IBA at Tulsa Intl(back when FBO's with contract fuel were few/far between)??

All of those places mentioned above offer great chow, but don't forget about Ellington Fld outside of Houston. They have pretty good food at the FBO and its FREE with every fill-up. (God I love having Uncle Sam pay for my gas!) Anyway its a quick turn and the ladies behind the front desk aren't too hard on the eyes either. But to stay on the subject College Station is a decent stop on an out/in.

Ellington

NavyGuy,
I concur on Ellington, any FBO that gives out free beer is tops on my list, not to mention the new hot tub, gym, awesome home theatre/briefing room. Hell, sometimes I fly down there just to watch a movie and chill for the afternoon. I am also definately guilty of having contributed to the declining condition of their BMW 325 courtesy car..lol. As a side note..Got to love those implants on that Lisa chic.

Upgraded EFD?

I hadn't been there in several years, but it looks like Ellington is on my "Next O&B" List.

Slug,

You gotta check it out. I can't believe the red carpet treatment that fella who owns the FBO rolls out. Free beer, free food, a "Briefing Room" - if that's what you want to call it. It's actually an awesome theatre. He's also got his own version of billeting. He's built 6 rooms (I think 6) and charges nearly nothing for them. Also, I think he's building more. This guy has cornered the market on service and I think it's working. Every time I go there the ramp is busy!

Drop me a line sometime,

DLF8108,

I flew tweet ACE at K.I. Sawyer, then at Barksdale. Never made it into Tulsa, though.

One of my favorite stops used to be Pelican Avaition, at Acadiana Regional in New Iberia, Louisiana. A cool t-shirt and free lunch. Wednesdays used to be Cajun day for lunch.

The FBO owner supposedly knew the owner of Tabasco, and would get his hands on some of the mash left over from making the sauce. Then, he'd boil the crawdads with the mash. Those were the best mudbugs I ever had!

Cajun Wednesday

I had to pay a dollar for my meals.. What’s up with that? Ha Ha Ha. I think they started charging a dollar. Or it depends on how they feel. I pay about every other time. Everyday is some sort of Cajun cuisine. They just got some golf shirts in there too. I think they are 6 bucks or so. Not too bad. Well off to Ellington today. Have to train the new force!!!

Answer to the OP

To (finally) answer the OP, the Tweets you saw and heard at CLL were Laughlin jets. Rasta is a DLF X-C call-sign, but to make sure check out the tails of the jets on the ramp:

XL=Laughlin
RA=Randolph
CB=Columbus
VN=Vance
EN=Sheppard (I think - I usually can't see the tails because the IPs are blocking it as they talk with their hands!)

Freebirds is THE place in CLL. I had a policy that any student that ate an entire Super Monster burrito in one sitting could not only sleep on the way home (it's a T-1), he also got an automatic E for the ride. I had many attempts and many miserable, pale students but no winners. The closest was a kid who actually got down to scooping out the filling of the burrito with a spoon at the bottom of his Super Monster...only to lean over and puke out most of it onto the floor of Freebirds during lunchtime. Not a good way for a single Lt to pick up any chicks.....

The best "free lunch" scam I saw was some of our guys who got sent to pick up a T-1 at CWF (Chennault - the $1 lunch miracle). They got squired into CWF by another T-1 and strolled into the FBO to order thier $1 po-boys. They were informed that the $1 lunch was only for people who bought gas, and since the airplane they were flying back had not bought gas, lunch was $5 each.
In record time they returned with the fuel card to the suspect T-1, and simply said "Fill 'er up, and I'll take the $1 special".

Pay your taxes on time, because otherwise this buffoonery could not take place!

Kc downtown

I don't know about free steaks, but I was down there on Friday and there were some cute girls working. Alot better than I am used to at the other FBO's I normally visit.

Man...I just hope there isn't some disgruntled, SUPT wash-out wanting to turn us in for F,W & A after this thread. :) I go (when runway length allows) into civilian fields for the " quality training" my student wouldn't get at a mil field. ;)

check six

Quality Training

Uh me too, that's what I was always thinking about, quality student training. Joe Allen's was never the reason I went to ABI Muni vs. Dyess, it was always quality training.

Gee guys, its alright to have a bit of fun as long as it is legal and you are accomplishing the mission.

Regards,
