So I just read TB memo preparing FO's for street captains. My question is if ALPA is not voted in, who will make sure this done in a proper, fair way? Not just what is easier for the company? Who will try to get bypass pay? Who will stand behind the FO's?

They better dual qualify the street captains in the right seat because A LOT of the FOs, I have flown with, and talked to, said they will bail when/if that happens.

You know it is bad when GW out of SHD is doing TDY out of ALB for 10 days in two weeks.

It is a cluster to put it mildly.

you count me in on that

So upgrade eligible FO's at Colgan are going to be bypassed for off the street captains?

If that doesn't fuel the ALPA fire, nothing will.

ASA and Pinnacle have both had street captains in the past and they are ALPA. Oh wait, hired as a FO and turned into a captain day 2 of ground school to make it legit.

At Eagle, all captains, all fleets are dual qualified.

Yes, but it is a bit different if there are eligible FO's who want right seat but are bypassed to reduce training cycles....

Turbo

Colgan is upgrading all eligible FO's. They just need more Captains with the Q coming on line. When a street captain is hired they usually go in the beach and it is like one or two people...don't get all in a bunch. Number 200 or so is in IOE right now...that is like further than into half the roster.

If you are in a bunch just think when you upgrade you will be senior to them.

Chill

I would imagine no ALPA carrier has succesfully hired out-of-seniority captains, and they have reatined their position. (Save for J4J agreements)

None of the guys got displaced out of their seat. Granted, they were/are junior to all the FOs upgrading but they kept the seat.

Colgan hired Saab captains off the street in 2000-2001 and hired about 22 Saab captains in early 2005.

Colgan hires street captains and keeps qualified FOs (who should be captains) in the right seat because they can't find FOs off the street to fill those slots.

It has happened before and will happen again.

This is the situation happening at Gulfstream right now. Eligible FO's are being bypassed for upgrade and off the street captains are taking their places. Granted we are not ALPA, but this is ridiculous! The worst part is the street captains have no prior 121 experience. The only reason to stay and fly a turboprop is for 121 PIC especially at GIA. Needless to say most FO's at GIA are leaving due to management's great leadership and decision making ability.
Even if Colgan went looking for street captains, they are not going to find many qualified ones. The pilot shortage is here folks, but even worse, the qualified pilot shortage is fast approaching.

Don't Delay, Vote Today!!!!!
www.alpa.org/colgan

If you have not received your ballot go to www.alpa.org/colgan for instructions on how to request a duplicate. Otherwise, contact a member of the Organizing Committee.

If you have not received your ballot, you need to send in the request (by mail) ASAP!!!!

EVERYONE should be voting for this, Especially FO's who don't want to get the shaft when they are short of people.

Just the fact that you would write this assures me that you are not qualified for upgrade.

No I am already in the left seat here.

The FO I am flying with this month has 1600 hours of total time and 800 hours in the airplane. Would it REALLY be fair to him to hire someone off the street and upgrade them above him? Other airlines have no posted mins. If your seniority is up and you have ATP mins you have the chance to prove yourself and upgrade.

Interesting how the 'insurance' mins change on the companies needs that day.

It would be fair because the min. for upgrade is 2200 TT with 500 in type, or 1500 TT with 1000 in type. They cant go any lower.

Wow...800 throwing the gear in the Saab...and 800 in the pattern in a 172....I want you carrying my family this winter out of JST.....

Just relax and try to learn something over there. The upgrade is coming fast for a lot of people....be ready.

I am not trying to sound harsh but the reality of 1600 hours is not a lot of experience. Many guys in the left seat now came to CJC with like 2500hrs and upgrades at like 3500hours...times are changing but be sure you are in the right seat learning...not complaining and whining...

1200 is the min for PIC in a 207 flying checks at night...you could get the job there...or Cape Air...if you can pass thier interview...

What happens if they hire street captains with 2000 hour total time but have been sitting right seat of an RJ for 500 hours. Does that make them safer?

What do we have in place to protect the FOs, if off the street hiring occurs? So much for their quick upgrade eh? Might as well have some work rules in place to protect them.

This issue is industry wide. Are there folks out there with 1600TT that can handle the responsibility? Absolutely. I do get nervous though when I think of a 23 year old with 1600 hours flying around a 30,000lb airplane with my family on it. Its a maturity thing not necessarily a time thing.

I'm not sure what the right thing to do is? I guess you COULD lower the times to ATP mins but if the fail rate goes up or the FAA decides to attend all of the type rides who are you really helping? I don't feel sorry for the airlines...they've fed us a diet of crappy wages and tough working conditions (not just Colgan). Now pilots are in short supply and things are going to become very difficult from a staffing point of view. I think street captains are going to be just as hard to find so I think this point is mute anyway.

The opportunities to upgrade will be out there...the trick is getting through the process without dinging up your career.
