When I flew the CRJ, it seemed pretty obvious to me that heat should have been kept on the airplane in sub-zero conditions, or connected to a power cart at the very least. It's a great machine and will perform in those conditions when you ask it to. But is it necessary to ask all the freakin' time? Sometimes the APU simply won't start after coldsoaking for 8 hours.

I realize that these are "commuter flights", and no one gives a crap, apparently...but flights would operate a lot more efficiently if someone would just decide to throw a tiny bit of money at the problem.

My airline has a policy whereby when the temperature goes below a certain level (-30 or 40 C I believe) we leave the APU running all night long. This ensure not only that everything will work in the morning but that we have a nice warm airplane for the pax (and me) in morning. Usually we only have to do this in Canada but once in a while we will have to do this in North Dakota or Maine. Those days suck.

Perhaps something logical could have been done to get this flight out ontime. Something to think about.

Last I can recall SkyWest generally doesn't have problems getting flights out on time (see 2003 and 2004 DOT stats). Something to think about as well...

One of the hardest things I have to do in my job is to gently explain to passengers that in this business of flying a 50,000 lb. aircraft six miles above the Earth at 500 mph, sometimes things go wrong and it is better to be a little late than it is to be a little dead.

Usually I look in the face of complete indignation, as if I care nothing, and how DARE I make this person late. This is the world we live in. So much for the cooperative passenger/crew spirit post 9/11.

It's funny how one late/cx'd flight and the whole concept of taking that airline again is out the window and their every flaw blown out of proportion, magnified and the crew vilified as if it were an intentional act just to tick the pax off!

How many other times has that airline gotten the flight out on time in the same conditions? How many times have we (I'm not Skywest) and other airlines hustled our buttocks for a quick turn to get a plane out on time so our pax make their connection. No one seems to notice then...

Not saying its YOUR problem (?), you need your required rest, but its this system/attitude that has put the airlines where they are today.

Ummm, I don't know where you would have heard that: All the EMBs are equipped with an FMS that reports OOOI times and most of the UAL CRJs and about half of the DAL CRJs have ACARS. Those that do not are being retrofitted.

Actually i believe it was a couple of A-rabs that flew a plane or two in the WTC.
