Cockpit jumpseats restored!

We just received word from the IPA jumpseat committee that the FAA has given verbal permission to use the UPS CASS system throughout all the airlines by august all ATA members (which are mostly the majors) and the bigger regionals. Will have the capability to carry offline jumpseaters in the cockpit. This will be a 6 month trial program and if there are no glitches I believe it will be extended to all carriers that choose to participate. It is basically a common database that will contain all pilots at a specific airline.

This will return jumpseaters to the cargo carriers.

I have heard the same. Hopefully the TSA in its "finite" wisdom does not try to screw things up with some type of moronic stipulations.

Hopefully we can get some dignity back to this whole security thing.

I didn't read anything about the RAA guys. The article I read said the ATA members would be involved in the test program.

Can anyone else confirm this?

Lets just hope that this includes dispatchers, since per 121.547, at one time we were also eligible to ride JS.

It would be nice to see unlimited JS in the back if there's empty seats. I sure hate to see us leave the gate with 30 empty seats and 3 JS'ers with that sad puppy look still at the gate! Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Sounds like you need to have a talk with the company about making any empty passenger seat a jumpseat. We have always made that our policy here at ATA, it pays off. Now AWA and SWA extend the same courtesy to us.

Of course, that is easier said than done.

In-cockpit jumpseating

Anyone know what the current status of this is? By the time this story filtered its way down to Great Lakes, I heard that the TSA had already said "NO" to this plan. I hope it isn't true.

Commuting without possibility of a cockpit jumpseat is sometimes pure hell. Just to let anybody know who might not have been aware, any open seat at Lakes is a jumpseat. Sure wish we could convince certain majors to extend the same courtesy.

Speaking of being left behind at the gate......that's exactly what happened to me this past Sunday. 4 times to be exact. I never did make it to work. I had to call the company and let them know that my luck had failed me.....again (the other time was in LAS, but we won't go there).
This is the first time that I haven't been able to make it to work because of lack of jumpseat authorization. I am not the kind to take the last flight to work either....these attempts were from noon until 7 pm on the day before my showtime !
Man, I cannot WAIT until we can ride jumpseat again. I am going bald "way too fast" worrying about my commute these days.

I think I read a memo that stated this would start on Aug 10th. I believe that it states that as long as the cabin is totally full, a pilot from one of the ATA's list of airlines can jump in the cockpit of another ATA airline. This should help commuters greatly. If the loads continue to be full, then I hope to see some of you in the cockpit soon. Just remember, Delta only allows the number of jumpseaters equal to the number of jumpseats in the cockpit. 767-400's and some of the 767's (ER's) have two jumpseats. I wish we could change the policy, but I think we were going to get that in our negotiations that just broke down.

I want to extend a general thank you to some of the Delta crews/gate agents who have apparently done creative things with the paperwork to show other Delta/Delta Connection jumpseaters as "traveling on a pass" so I (an offline jumpseater) could get the one-and-only jumpseat. Thanks for making my commute easier!

Hey Bluebus driver....I feel your pain!! Last labor day(the day before,actually)I was trying to get to Charlotte or Atlanta from BWI. I got knocked off of 12 flights between Delta,Airtran and USAir!! And every #$@*&!! one of 'em went out with an empty jumpseat!!
