Correct me if I'm wrong ...

A private pilot (Class III medical only due to special issuance restrictions) can take CML training to inlcude the checkride and be issued the certificate but may not exercise the priviliges of the CML ticket without a Class II certificate.

I read 61.23 and I think I have a correct understanding of this issue ... but I've been at this long enough to realize my interpretation is not always in alignment with the FAA's of the english language.

Thanks

Yes.

Third class for the checkride, and a Second or First to exercise the privileges of the commercial.

Good luck with your ride.

Thanks for the prompt response ...

I, unfortunately, have to suffer checkrides every six months ... at least they are in the sim so I don't have to worry about freezing my posterior off during preflights this time of the year.

I try to stay active teaching ME applicants in BE-55/58/76s, Cessna 300/400 series and the PA23/30/34/39 line. It's a way of giving something back to the community. When I was 'paying my dues' some years ago it was fairly easy to build ME time in the civilian ranks. Not any more; at least from where I sit.

Most of my clients are owners who have cabin-class twins who are attempting to meet the insurance mandated recurrent training.

The insurance companies (and the underwriters) have recognized the benefits of recurrent training.

I try to make it a positive learning experience with the new emphasis being on preflight planning and JUDGEMENT.

If I can convince one owner/pilot that hitting the books with some degree of conviction and regularity is essential to safety; I consider it a victory.

Thanks again...

This rule changed a few years ago. You used to have to have a Class I or II medical in order to take the commercial check ride, although after that you could drop back to a Class III without exercising the commercial priveleges of your certificate. I ran into this last year while preparing for my commercial check ride because the FAA handbook for the designated examiners has not been updated to reflect the change in the FARs (or at least it hadn't been as of a year ago).

Nope...I agree with timebuilder. 3rd class to take any checkride, including ATP. 1st to exercise ATP privileges. 1st or 2nd to exercise comm. privs.
