Hey,
I just interviewed with a local company that is buying a used Cessna CJ1. What would you guys think the average pay is to fly one single pilot? I would also be doing some computer work in the office on days not flying. So what do think it worth?
Thanks for your time.

If you are the only pilot at this company, then you would be wearing the "Aviation Dept. Mgr." hat, which is worth about $83,000/yr. according to Pro Pilot's salary survey (I know, but it's the only survey I had handy).

I don't know what the going rate for computer workers is these days, but certainly worth at least $25,000/yr.

That looks like about $108,000/yr. to me.

If you're going to be expected to perform additional duties aside from flying and managing the airplane, then you should expect to be compensated for them.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for your optimism, I was thinking about 70Kish. Their insurance will let them do it single pilot, but the board might overrule that and it would be up to me to procure some part time co's. I mean is 70-80K plus benefits sound fair for a CJ1? They only expect to fly it 150 hours a year mostly day trips. They did also mention getting on a local guys 135 cert. to lower unit costs? I got the impression at first that they just wanted a part time dude to manage it, but I think I talked them out of that. I guess we'll see.

EKU,
Remember, they are getting a multi million dollar jet and they WILL be flying VIP's of the company in that jet, 1 or 2% of the cost should be close to your annual pay with benefits and a Co pilot should be half of that..DON'T SELL yourself short.....or for that matter your fellow pilots

By that math it would be like 54k at the most. (0.02 x 2.7 mil) Its a used airplane. Did you mean the original retail price?

So I was being a bit facetious with the $108,000, but don't sell yourself short. If you're going to be flying and managing the aircraft and working in the office and possibly going the 135 route then you are going to have a lot on your plate.

Sounds like it could be a good job, but remember once you start accepting other duties outside of flying, it's hard to go back to the boss and try to change things. If, at the beginning, you have an understanding that you will fly and manage the airplane for "x" amount and then if you have to perform other duties not related to the aircraft, then you expect to be compensated at "y" amount, then not only are you sending the message that 1) you are a professional pilot and expect to get paid as one and 2) you don't mind going the extra mile for the company, but you will not do it for free.

Hope everything goes your way!

Looks like we will be talking money this coming week. Does anyone have access to NBAA survey for single pilot ops in a CJ, or from Business and Commercial Aviation. Just want to have something to base my offer on.

Thanks in advance.

Well They offered the job.
It will be flown by a crew. The ins. co. wants me to get like 100 hrs with someone with 525 time. They have that lined up. Then I will be on mine own with contracted co-pilots. I will manage the airplane and also do other jobs around the office.

They offered 50k to start and 70k when I get the ins. co. blessing.

What do you all think? I told them I would think about it and get back.

I would say $70 to start and then a raise after getting the insurance blessing. $50 is low to be the captain of a jet no matter how many people are in the cockpit. Now I know that is a difficult situation. You may really need the job and it may be a good one, so hard to pass up. I would try to explain to them the importance of your position and have them understand that. I'm sure you've been around a while if you are getting this job so make sure you get paid for your experience.

$50K is fairly typical for a CJ here in the Southeast, but an extra $20K for the desktop support sounds low. :D

Well the 50k and 70k were a base but I'm going to tell them I need at least 60k and then 80k, with the understanding the pay would be renegotiated when I can find a niche in the office.

My old CP was making mid-50's for a similar job 10 yrs ago. Managed the a/c in all aspects full time. I'd say he was underpaid then, before gas tripled in $, etc. I wouldn't take less than about 80 (to start - depending on the area). It amazes me how some of these cheap bastards want a jet to whisk them around the country at a monment's notice, with all the safety of a 121 jet, but don't want to shell out the bucks. You gotta pay to play.

Well just talked and it looks like 65k to start and when the ins. co. gives their blessing it will be 85k. I go to school in 2 weeks.
Thanks for the input guys/gals

ekuflyer,

Way to go!!!! Sounds like you did some great negotiating.

Now I have one less competitor in the job market!

Congrats, again.
