City requests hearing on FAA fine over Meigs

September 22, 2005 - The city of Chicago has requested a hearing to challenge a $33,000 fine imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration for Chicago's late-night demolition of Meigs Field.

The FAA says the hearing requested yesterday will be held before an administrative law judge at the U-S Department of Transportation.

A date for the hearing hasn't yet been set. City Corporation Counsel Mara Georges says the city's unannounced bulldozing of the runway at the lakefront airport was justified to protect the downtown from a possible terrorist attack.

Mayor Richard Daley ordered the demolition and crews began bulldozing the airport's only runway late at night on March 30th, 2003.

The move was done without FAA approval. And FAA officials say Chicago was required to give the agency 30-days notice before it shut down Meigs Field. (Copyright 2005 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

hahahah.....a possible terrorist attack from Meigs Field..that's rich!

now pilots aren't required to have two way radio communications in that area. If anything, closing the airport along with the class d airspace made it less secure

Next election? In Chicago? Like it matters... Daley's already got the vote tallys out to the wards.TC

Yeah - I always thought it was strange that Gore used Richard M. as one of his spokespeople during the 2000 election controversy. Why would you have someone whom people associate, either through his own actions or those of his father, with vote-rigging to contend that the election was stolen from you? Unless he was using the philosophy that "it takes a thief . . ."

It also doesn't help that there has not been a good challenger in any of the voting. People don't care anymore. Yeah, he gets 60-75% of the vote, but with voter turnout less than 25% (including dead people ;) ) you have less than 20% of the actual residents voting for him.

My grandfather has voted for Daley in every election since the 1960s. He hasn't lived in Chicago for 50 years and has been dead since 1985, even voted for the other guy in 1960. But, he has not missed an election and neither have his dogs.
