SEATTLE - An Alaska Airlines flight carrying congressman Dave Reichert from Seattle to Washington D.C. was diverted to Denver Monday afternoon after a flaw was spotted on the plane.
Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Amanda Tobin Bielawskit said Flight 4 made the unscheduled stop as a precaution after a one-inch paint chip was discovered near the plane's rear door.
The chip was considered cosmetic and there was no damage to the aircraft.
Reichert was one of 160 passengers who remained on board the aircraft while inspection was completed.
The Boeing 737-400 with 160 passengers on board spent a little over an hour in Denver.
The paint chip was near the rear door of the aircraft and was noticed by a catering crew.
Alaska said the paint chips are somewhat routine on the exterior of the aircraft, but they would not impact the safety or integrity of the aircraft.
Bielawski said the plane was on the ground in Denver for about an hour and 20 minutes.
Reichert's press secretary said the congressman will probably miss dinner and two votes in the House because of the unscheduled stop.
Kimberly Candena said Reichert wasn't the least bit bothered by the unscheduled stop. She said the two bills, which focus on water and fish, don't have a Washington connection and look like they will pass easily
Something smells fishy here. So why was this plane REALLY diverted?
- A chip in the paint......90% of airliners are flying around with chipped paint.
- Catering crew notices it (thinks nothing of it at first, like normal)
- Then some caterer feels obliged to tell someone of a 1" chip!!! C'mon!
- Plane diverts to have the 1" paint chip inspected...Another C'mon!!
