I am torn here. On the one hand, I am very upset at the stupidity of the few morons that not only "tortured" the prisoners, but then had the gall to take pictures of it all. How dumb can people get? (Don't answer that--I already know.)
On the other hand, I can't help but wonder where the uproar was when our guys were being hung from a bridge, burned to a crisp, and (in another "war") dragged through the streets. The blatant double-standard that the United States is measured against gets me down, I guess. But, c'est lavie, right?
My feelings on the war have changed a bit over the past months, which is probably what the folks doing all the bombing have in mind. If enough Americans grow tired of seeing the death tolls climb, then surely we'll all leave and they can run things their way. History, though, tells a different tale. We have been in other wars where things were far bleaker than they are today (read about the Pacific campaigns in WWII), and yet America withstood the craziness. Will we do the same thing?
My only question is this: If we had invaded Afghanistan in the name of preventative measures prior to 9/11, would we have treated the Afghan campaign differently? In other words, while we don't have WMD to look at, and our guys are getting hit constantly by cowards with homemade bombs, what might we have prevented by eliminating a government that was clearly anti-American and posed some kind of threat to our national security?
I realize that we'll never be able to prove anything regarding "might-haves" or "could-have-beens," and the Smoking Man (a la X-Files) will not suddenly appear to tell us everything we need to know. I am just an American citizen who still has some faith in his government...
