Ok, I am a new 135 pilot but have many years as chief pilot under part 91. I would like to apply for the waiver and get the title at my current company but have been told that the waiver is rairly approved. Anyone have any first hand expience at this? Any info, good or bad news, would be apprechiated.

Thanks,

Newbee

I was in the same boat. You have to be able to show and document (i.e. in detail) your comparitive managerial experience. I claimed a Part 91 "Chief Pilot" position (has no meaning to FAA) supervising other pilots working for an aircraft dealer, but it didn't fly. My Part 135 SIC time was not considered either. Had to wait til I was able to document 3 yrs culmultive PIC Part 135 time (in the last 6 yrs I think, also) until I could serve as the Chief Pilot and upgrade our Single PIC Pt 135 Operator to a Basic Pt 135 Operator. Somewhere in the 8400 handbook tells you what you need and how to submit it. Had to do the letter over agian because it was not in the correct format. We had an pilot earlier who started our 135, who had no135 time, got approved as Chief pilot, but he was able to document a wealth of military and civilian command time and managerial test pilot time.

The answer to this question and virtually any other aviation related question can be found in this great new book I picked up called “EVERYTHING EXPLAINED for the Professional Pilot”.

If everyone on this board had a copy, there would be no reason to post a question!

Chief Pilot waiver

I was given a waiver for Chief Pilot for a 135 department. The problem rests with your local FSDO. In the Inspectors hand book there is a provision for waivers. Basically the way it goes is:

You accrue time towards the 36 months from the time you are captained (this includes VFR Captain).

In addition you can accrue time if you hold a company position I.E. Assistant C.P., Assistant D.O., Director of Training. This time can add up congruently. See the example.

VFR Captain 01/01-06/01 6 months
IFR Captain 07/01-07/03 24 months
Assistant C.P. 01/03-07/03 6 Months

total of 36 months

135 Chief Pilot

Additionaly,

You may have to hire a Chief Pilot for the 18 months that it will take for you to qualify if you do not meet the requirements. You would have to be the "Assistant Chief Pilot" For 18 months and a Captian for 18 months (total 36 months). If it helps, I am available and have been a 135 Department Chief Pilot.
