I mentioned the idea of a fly-by of downtown Chicago in another thread and the response has been positive, so I thought I create its own thread.

My idea is this, after the Meigs class D airspace closes, organize as many GA aircraft as possible, to do a flyby of downtown Chicago in the soon to be class G airspace. Fly just off-shore at 500'agl in a steady sucession. Some aircraft could tow banners stating stuff like "we can fly here now because Meigs is closed" and "how safe do you feel Mr. Daley". Publicize it as much as possible. A steady stream of aircraft flying by downtown Chicago in what is now uncontrolled airspace would surely generate news and show how absurd mayor Daley really is.

One caveat to all this is it has to be done legally and safely. Anything otherwise would do damage to GA when the purpose is to show it in a positive light.

Thoughts?

yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

SO LETTS GO PHQUNA,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

grrr.. walter jacobson just complimented daley's actions in "Walter's Perspective" on the news, which isn't TOO horrible, except...

they showed a clip of a small airplane superimposed over the chicago skyline and aimed at the sears tower for about 20 seconds while he was talking about how dangerous small airplanes are...

i hate ignorant f*cking sheeple

Cute idea, but if it gets noticed at all, it will only cause more problems than it might solve. If it's awareness you're after, Mayor Daley will have ample opportunities to use it against you, with little chance for rebut or defense on your part.

A lot of money and a lot of clout has been swung so far. A group of pilots putting by in bugsmashers won't do a bit of good. All you'll get for your trouble, if anything, is a statement by the twisted Mr. Daley saying "See! They're coming in droves, and any one of them could strike us without warning. We got rid of that airport not a moment too soon."

Why give him the chance?

Far better to show that vital services have been lost, and approach it on his level. Flying by won't prove anything, but a clear showing that the airport being unavailable has caused hardship to the city will. Can you show that?

The AOPA Legal team are organizing a response on a number of fronts. They are going to hit Daley where it hurts. In the pocketbook. Check out the AOPA website on info on things you can do to help.

Ive been in aviation since 1987, been poor for the vast majority of those years, but every year I cut checks to AOPA and EAA. I feel the same way about my ALPA dues.

Imagine if we didn't have a voice like AOPA right now to go to court for us. They may lose this one, but they'll give it a good try.

One caveat to all this is it has to be done legally and safely. Anything otherwise would do damage to GA when the purpose is to show it in a positive light

While other pilots may understand that it is legal and safe, the general public, who do not know or care about the technical details of the FARs, will likely see it as both unsafe and threatening, proving Daley's point. I don't think it's a good idea.

fly-by

I think its a really bad idea. A fly-by will just give him the ammo he needs to set up a "termporary TFR" or "temporary ADIZ" around the city just like Washington D.C. did.

I remember hearing a website called d.c.pilots.com talking about the same exact thing just after September 11th. . . .

I think slamming ORD with a jillion little planes so all the citizenry is screwed by the little twerp mayor's stupidity would work better.

So solly, couldn't land at Miegs....

Oops, had to abort that take-off too. Where can I taxi around these four hundred backed up 757s, tower - and can I get a progressive for that?!?

Jacobsen

I see Jacobsen continues to be a dweeb. He was 10 years ago when I lived there and nothing changes. He's a dweeb and Daley is still Boss...Just a dam*ed shame Mike Royko isn't still with us to chip in his $.02!
