Can anyone direct me to an inexpensive hotel in SLC that commuting pilots use and get a good rate at? Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure if they have special pilot discounts, but I'd try the Comfort Suites. It's pretty close to SLC Intl and it's about a block or two away from the GA side. I stayed there once a few months ago and got a pretty decent rate. I think I got 10% off for a AAA discount (could be thinking of another place though).

You might give Little America a try, I've been there when they have pretty reasonable rates for a big hotel, but other times it's out of my league, seasonally dependent, maybe. There's a bunch of pretty low rent motels on North Temple on the way to town from SLC, some are kind of sleazy, but it beats sleeping in a van down by the river.

If you are actually in the airport go to the hotel board by the baggage claim and start calling - almost all of them give some kind of a discount. I stayed at the Airprot Holiday Inn about 2 weeks ago - $35 per night. Off the top of my head other hotels that will give you a discount - All the Holiday Inn and Expresses, the Sheraton, the Marriot, Comfort Inn, Little America, Hyatt, and the Ramada. The Holiday Inn was the best deal that I found that had a pool and hot tub. Good Luck.
