Change Your Airmen Certificate Number

Effective June 1st, 2002, all original airmen certificates will be issued with a unique certificate number. The Airmen Certification Branch will no longer be assigning Social Security Numbers (SSN) as the certificate numbers.

Airman certificates presently using the SSN as a certificate number will continue to be issued with that number unless the airman requests a unique number.

If you hold an airman certificate that uses your SSN as your certificate number and you would like our office to change that certificate number to a unique number other than your SSN, or you would like our organization to remove your SSN completely from our official records, please complete, sign, and submit this form (Click here to download a form to change your airmen certificate number) along with all pertinent information to the mailing address below:

Mailing Address: FAA
Airmen Certification Branch, AFS-760
PO Box 25082
Oklahoma City, OK 73125-0082

Thanks.

So are most people selecting option #1 or #2?

What are the benefits/drawbacks to each method?

I went with I beleieve was option #2, to totally eliminate my SSN from FAA records... worked fine... Had new certificates in a couple weeks, was an amazingly easy process, considering that the FAA is involved...

I went with option #1. I don't mind putting it down on my medical app, I was just worried about the post someone made about your cert# going on international flight plans...

I did option 2. If you choose option 2 you are told NOT to put down your social on any medical or FAA Apps ever again (you still do with option 1). You are assigned a random number that I actually got from Flight Doc's office girl when I updated my physical.

Our SSN's are still used too much with Banks and others but at least the FAA can't add to it being spread around or those that look at your id.
