Does Skywest hire many CFIs? Or are you pretty much required to have past turboprop experience? I'm trying to go to an all multi engine school so that my total time will be mostly light multi engine, would this matter much to the interview board? Also on a side note, how senior is the PSP base, I was at the airport a few days ago and crews seemd really old for regional pilots, do most live in psp area or is it senior because it's easily commutable to LA?

It's so all those crusty old PSP-based regional CA's will have the health care and shuffleboard infrastructure nearby. Geez, ain't it obvious.

Well, about SkyWest. I interviewed over a week ago. Great Company. I did not get the job due to having low time (as stated on letter). I am a CFI and the level of people they have interviewing is high, also current 121 pilots. The next level about me was about 1900 total time, I believe. My feelings about the interview was good. I will have my stuff in there in 6 months, again. I had a couple pilots write letters to the HR staff and I believe that is why I got the interview. Yes, I had a hard time with a couple of the questions in the tech but everything else was satisfactory or above. I made it through the day. which awas an accomplishment? Am I mad for not getting the Job? No, not at all. Sad? A little, but I know that I am low time and 6 more months of expirience will help me get there. This may sound funny but I am satified with the interview and next time (if they invite me back) I know what to expect. There are people that get in with low time but right now after not hiring for 6 months the level is higher. Good luck.

Couldn't hurt to try as a CFI. I interviewed with previous 121 time while the others I interviewed with were mostly CFI's. I didn't get hired, a couple of the CFI's did, so you never know. At least try, do your best, have a good attitude and it will probably work out. Good luck.

I was hired at 1000/130 with a CFI background. half of my class was CFI's with quite a few only having between 1000-1300 hours total time

Two buddies of mine just got hired there. Both CFIs with around 1700TT.

If they like you, you will get hired. It's getting the interview that's probably the hardest part if you're a low time CFI. Once at the interview, everyone is equal.

FIGHTIN ILLINI!!!

Now I just need to get one of you guys to walk in my stuff.

You think so?
Good luck.

For the pilot job faire, can you just show up, or do you need a minimum time etc?

Yes, you do need to meet the minimums, or they will just send you home. Usually they give a presentation on SkyWest, administer the written test and do a few minutes of meet and greet. Based on that, you may get an interview at SLC at a later date to do the rest of the process... at least that's the way it used to work.

I agree. They interview people they want to hire

Put any pilot domicile in a resort town and it's pretty much a given that it will be a very senior base.

If you get hired by SkyWest you might try to avoid getting based in PSP now that you've referred to those pilots as geezers. If you do end up flying there and want to see a funny look on their face, right after rotation say "gear up, flaps up, bleeds on, water off." Oh and be sure to not let them leave their canes and dark glasses in the aircraft when you get to the overnight. It's a real problem for them the next morning when that happens.

Just in case anyone is thinking I'm serious, please recognize the attempt at sarcasm/humor. Just a joke.

I talked to Cassidy yesterday and she said to call her the day my six months is up. Learned from it and I starting to prep for the next round. Later.

Palm Springs is actually fairly junior for FO's. The CA's are senior because they've been there since the metro days. (refer to DB's post) Several new-hires have gone there right out of class and are trying to get somewhere else so if that's where you want to be it wouldn't take long.

As for the interviews ... the key to getting on as a CFI is to really impress the interviewers. You need to know more than the "average" CFI. Just because you've never flown a turbine airplane doesn't mean you shouldn't know anything about it. If you can go in there and know your airplane backwards and forwards, and know something about a type of aircraft you've never flown, that's impressive. That tells them that they can teach you the EMB or the CRJ systems and you're not going to have trouble passing ground school.

1000 hour guys trying to get on at an airline are a dime a dozen. Skywest has 1000 hour guys/gals interview every week. If you're one of the ones that stands out of the crowd with your knowlegde you'll get hired.

Well, now I feel like $hit.

Hey I know how you feel. I too made it through all phases, and felt I had done well at the end of the day. Got along with all the interviewers, did well on the tech, aced the sim. I even burned all my vacation time I and sequestered myself away for two weeks and studied my a$$ off in preparation; felt like I was in initial all over again! So I was shocked when I got "the letter". Like I said, I was the only one that day that had 121 experience, and wasn't hired. Ya, that hurts. The hardest part is not knowing what got me booted. I really have no idea as I felt it was a very good interview. But, all you can do is know you did your best, learn from it, study, and give it another go in six months, and if you're like me, take advantage of still having a decent income meanwhile to pay down the bills to make it through first year FO pay when you do get hired ;)
