Im gettin ready for my II ride...any stories about the oral/flight?... I already have my initial so im sure it wont be as bad...

Easiest checkride I've taken. Taught NDB approaches and holds on the ground, and in the air, demonstrated/taught one NDB approach, one NDB hold partial panel, and one VOR approach. Done.
 
Easy.

taught VOSR's and interception,compass turns,pitot/static system,vacuum system, holding speeds, draw out an ILS. done..

Flight. radial intercepts and tracking,ILS,NDB partial panel. fairly simple
 
My CFII was the first instructor ride I had taken, so for the oral a big part of it consisted of the FOI, endorsements, instructor certificates, etc.

As for actual technical areas, my big lesson I had to teach was on "All Things Magnetic Compass." Outside of that we didn't discuss a whole lot of technical subjects.

Also got a couple Lost Comm scenarios. The type where they dont want to hear the rote answers, they want to see you apply it to an actual situation.

I also had to do a flight plan to another airport 120 miles away. Explained briefly my flight planning procedures then got hammered with quite a few more "scenario" questions based on my plan. Total ground: 2.8

For the flight, I had to file my above flight plan, and we picked up the clearance on the ground, then flew it like you normally would. We flew it for about 5 minutes (just long enough to get on course and out of controlled airspace) then the fun began. He flew, and I taught: GPS Approach, VOR Approach, Autopilot-Coupled ILS Approach, DME Arc, and a the obligatory hold over one of the local VOR's. Then we shot another VOR approach back into our home airport and did a Circle To Land to full stop. Total flight: 1.6.

My biggest reccomendation is to go buy the "ASA Instrument Oral Exam Guide" if you haven't already and know and be comfortable with every question in there. And of course the IFR Regs are a big one, especially since you will be the instructor now and won't have the crutch of someone else who should know to back you up.

Any idea when you might be ready to take the II ride?

Is it typical for people to do their CFII ride with view limiting devices??

I wouldn't say it is "typical" but it isn't unusual either to do a portion of the II ride with the view limiting device on. It will vary depending on the DE. The ride is not very difficult, should be nothing "new" to you....

Sweeeetttt...im gonna try and get the written done this weekend and finish it up and prolly have it next week or the week after...we shall see...
 
Super easy, oral was on the instruments and systems. ride was a VOR and an ILS to full stop.

Probably the easiest checkride i have ever done. 1 ILS approach and 1 full procedure ndb approach followed by a hold. 30 min oral flew by easy ride. You shouldnt have any problems.
 
When the examiner walked in the room, he said, "Aside from the multi, this is probably the easiest checkride you'll ever take." Had to explain how the airspeed indicator worked, that was the hardest part of the oral. I wore a hood for the entire flight after take off.

Just like on the initial CFI ride, don't shut up during the flight. Keep explaining everything you're doing.
 
I was asked questions straight out of the AIM for such things as "what are the two types of airspace", what are the part 91 requirements for an IFR flight, even some FOI questions.

Inflight I did a hold and an ILS approach, then I taught the examiner how to do a GPS approach.

Kind of like using a sandblaster on a snowball.... He'd never seen a GPS approach before, but he didn't want me to spend the time to teach it to him properly. That reminds me, the next time I pass through town he needs a copy of my GPS book.

Don't be complacent. Quite a few examiners test add-on candidates on the FOI, even though they had previously demonstrated their knowledge of it during their initials.

Just as with any instructor practical, the FAA publications are its last word on what to know, how it should be known, how to do it and how to teach it. In other words, it's the Instrument Flying Manual and not Richard Taylor for which you will be held responsible.

The flight probably will be something like an instrument ride out of the right seat, probably not as long, and with you teaching the entire time. I'm not kidding about "entire time." Don't stop teaching until the examiner hands you your wet Temporary and asks you to sign it.
