Does anyone think that the flight school that you did your CFI at has any obligation to hire you?? If so why?? Also any tips on where to find CFI job postings??

Thanks,

No, not unless they say so. Also, I think I'd avoid schools that did promise to hire. Not only is it sort of a PFT-light situation, but the quality of training is bound to be better at a school that has a more rigorous screening process.

Now, I did go to a school that promised to hire (a state-run academic institution) and I have no complaints about the quality of my training, well, at least my CFI training, anyway. But I was lucky (yeah, lucky--I have 1/4 to 1/8 of the student loan debt load that others with my same credentials have.)

Hiring obligations

Not necessarily, but it depends on the school. Flight schools tend to hire their own.

When I was at ERAU-Prescott in '88-'91, the school hired from the outside and inside (by inside I mean students who earned all ratings through CFI at Riddle). Then, it went to inside, only, because, it was felt, they were easier to standardize. FlightSafety, in 1991-'92, hired quite a bit from the outside because it wanted experienced instructors for its contract programs. But it still hired from the inside (same definition as above). FSI "inside" instructors did not go on the line right away, but taught ground school, worked in Dispatch and Scheduling, etc. for several months before they were standardized. The FSI interview for "inside" students was quite rigorous. I don't have recent information, but I understand that there's a six-month waiting list for hire at FSI.

I second Goose on CFI hiring promises. Promises are broken all the time - but the possibility of hire upon graduation should still be an important consideration when choosing a school.

CFI hiring

I agree with everyone so far. I do think that the schools should train their students to the level they would expect the instructors to be at...and if they don't train you to that level and then won't hire you...how nice is that.

I don't think a school is obligated to hire you. What if you suck and took your checkride 3 times to pass?

Training for the certificate and actually doing a good job teaching aren't the same.

I know instructors here that fit that exact description

*edit*
I don't think they're obligated to hire you. Some schools will tell you right up front: "We hire a lot of our students"...but that doesn't mean "We will/want to hire you".

I'm sure there are some out there (I even know of one) that will tell you, "Do your training here and you'll have a job"...for those ones...if they don't hire you, then yeah that's wrong because that was a condition of training...train here, work here...but.....
...anyway

American Flyers

I did the CFI Academy at American Flyers in W. Chicago, IL in 2001. It was right after 9/11 and I went there because it was a quick way to obtain both CFI&CFII in the whole 32 days it took me and I was told I could most likely have a job teaching there.
I was completely sold! The V.P himself and some real *%&# guy named Gene. These guys were jokesters. They said, "yeah we hire a few selected individuals that do our CFI course and I don't see why you wouldn't fit in here." So I did the whole course, passed both my checkrides on the first try. There were 4 of us and I was the only one that passed on the first time. Who got hired?? Wasn't me, that's for sure. It was a blonde haired blue eyed person that wore about a size 2 and failed their CFI checkride. Worked out for the best really. I'm not into the whole having to wear a tie and monkey suit to hop in a C-152, or C-172 to teach. I most likely would have gotten fired from that organization. That company really just wants your money!!!! Plus the rate they charge for instruction and A.C!!! However the CFI program is good. I did enjoy it and I passed my rides. They teach you how to tell the examiner everything they want to hear. Be cautious of American Flyers, everyone.......... So answere to your question?? Don't believe what they tell you. Get it in writing:0)

Well if you suck...then why would an instructor endorse you to take the ride....that is unethical I think. We as instructors have an obligation to tell students when they don't cut the mustard. Agree??

I think many flight schools tend to hire their own students as CFIs when the time comes. It's smart of them, however, to not make any promises, so they still have the ability to weed out the bad apples.

Bad apples, how come we continue to endorse these bad apples...just tell them they cannot flight instruct and say good bye...right.
