I've been doin the airline pilot guy thing and like a dumb dumb let my cfi cfii and mei expire. Well I want it back, i'm thinking all I need is the three hours of prep. I need you pros to chime in and let me know what I need to do.

FAR 61.199

You have to pass a practical test as prescribed in 61.183(h) of this part for one of the ratings listed on the expired flight instructor certificate.

Hope this helps.

§ 61.199 Expired flight instructor certificates and ratings.

(a) Flight instructor certificates. The holder of an expired flight instructor certificate may exchange that certificate for a new certificate with the same ratings by passing a practical test as prescribed in §61.183(h) of this part for one of the ratings listed on the expired flight instructor certificate.
(b) Flight instructor ratings. (1) A flight instructor rating or a limited flight instructor rating on a pilot certificate is no longer valid and may not be exchanged for a similar rating or a flight instructor certificate.
(2) The holder of a flight instructor rating or a limited flight instructor rating on a pilot certificate may be issued a flight instructor certificate with the current ratings, but only if the person passes the required knowledge and practical test prescribed in this subpart for the issuance of the current flight instructor certificate and rating.

You're screwed, gotta take a checkride.

I think that he already knew that, he was asking if prior to that all that he needs is the three hours of prep.

So one checkride gets all three ratings? For instance a CFII ride in a single gets my CFI and MEI as well as the CFII? And do I need that with the Feds or can that be with a DE?

Well, depends on the FSDO. In Chicago (DuPage FSDO) you have to get a DE and reserve a room at the FSDO for the ride. Any inspector can come in and take part in your oral. When it is time to fly, unless you flew over in a two seater, an inspector can go along also. I think this is the exception and not the rule. I knew someone in this area that just went over to Indiana and did her ride as to not have to deal with all the BS.

You don't even need the three hours prep for the ride, at least I didn't when I flew my re-instatement ride with a DE back in the early 90s. Now if you're using the ride to add a new instructor rating, you would need the three hours prep time.

Does not apply in this case. The passages highlighted in red pertain to persons having flight instructor privileges on their pilot certificate. This hasn't been done for some time now, and the flight instructor certificate is an entirely separate certificate from the pilot certificate. So, while the PIQ (person in question) must take a practical test, the red passages above are irrelevant.
