I don't know anything much about the CFI biz, but I saw an ad for a CFI on aviationcareers.com that struck me as odd. You guys can tell me if this is unusual or not.

A SW Florida flight school is advertising for a CFI but the catch is they want a
"Instructor-CFI with 172...". From this I take it to mean provide your own airplane for the privilege of associating with this school.

Is it customary for schools to ask the CFI to provide his own airplane or is this a new low in the pilot employment game...a leap from PFT to PFA ?

Cfi 172

Hey there, to me it doesn't seem too odd even though I haven't often seen that approach. I suppose I can understand the Flight School is low on aircraft and instructors so maybe they're looking to kill two birds with one stone? I talked to a few instructors this weekend who actually have their own plane but I don't think it tooooo common? However I may be wrong?! =)

So essentially the CFI is paying for the school's name and advertising through reduced wages?

Depending on my resources, I would think about going independent rather than provide MY airplane (and associated maintenance, increased insurance, etc.). Probably better money involved from the standpoint of CFI wages. Plus, you can be more competitive...

Just my $0.02.
