I sent about 10 cover letters and resumes out USPS to 10 places today. Should I wait til say, next monday, to call the people the resume was sent to, to follow up?

What kind of things do I say on the phone when following up?
My name is so and so, and I am calling to inquire on the receipt of my resume that was mailed to you last week?

Followups

Monday may be too soon. Give it about ten days. If you sent to regional H.R., beware. They get tons of resumes and may not remember yours.

As a general rule, as long as you have addressed your materials properly and directed them to the right person by name they should get there. Bear in mind that you're not the only one making followup phone calls. You don't want to be obnoxious or pushy. I don't recall ever making followup phone calls to regional H.R. because the fear of G-d was put into me that calling it might blackball me. I got five interviews. Perhaps if I were a little more pushy I would have gotten more interviews.

Good luck with your job search.
