Has anyone else had a problem porting their cellphone number to a new carrier?

We're switching from Verizon to T-Mobile. Bought new phones on 11/30 and the port STILL has not taken place.

We were told to call 3 days after the purchase if it hadn't happened. When we called we were told they needed another 48 hours.

48 hours later we called and we were told that our request was accepted and that we were in the queu and that the computer would process our request in 3 to 72 hours.

73 hours later we called again and they said that there was a "reference problem" and that they would put in a trouble-ticket and would work on it.

Yesterday I called and was told that they didn't know WHEN it would take place and that nobody really seemed to know WHAT a "reference error" was.

They told me I could either have a $35 credit per line, or I could return the phones and have a port request. They have no idea how long it will take for the port to take place.

Until then I have to carry 2 cellphones and 2 chargers on trips because WHEN the port FINALLY takes place...the old (verizon) phone will instantly cease to work.

I offered to cancel the port request but they told me that once the ball is rolling, it can't be stopped. The only solution would be to allow the port to take place and then port BACK to Verizon. (Sounds appealing doesnt it?)

Anybody else have any problems with the new number portability system?

I'm still trying to figure out why you would leave Verizon for T-Mobile.

You've got some explaining to do. :)

These problems were highlighted in the news last week. Could it be the phone companies conspiring to make the change seem very inconvenient so that folks won't want to do it?

Seemed like every time I called Verizon for minor housekeeping changes (moving to a new city, adjusting rate-plan, gettng new phone) they extended my contract without asking for a further two years.

Didnt care for being trapped.

yeah but, T-mobile???
I mean i know catherine zeta-jones is pretty friggin hot, but come on now :D

i didn't even realize they had any kind of significant coverage....

had t-mobile but switched to cingular GSM.....
T-mobile, great on highways and around bigger cities....go inside a building and signal cuts to a bar if you can get service.
Cingular is worlds better, still gsm and service coverage is much better. They even gave a $50 credit to show a recent t-mobile bill that i was switching from....
gotta love the rollover minutes ;)

Cingular proves it is far superior as to be the first company to introduce the charger that plugs into the phone line and automatically forwards calls to landline when on the charger.....
