on a different note. Does anyone have the "411" on Cathay? Schedules? QOL? Training? etc.....

Schedules for FO Cargo: 2 to 3 trips a month varying between 2 days to 10 days. Sometimes you will have an RT/PC during layover in HKG. Average 14-16 days off per month. However, 42 paid vacation days per year. Reserve is shared by all so chance of being extended a few times per year. Schedules published on the 15th so plenty of advance warning on your commute. Sample schedule:
1 2 3 4 5 678910 1112131415161718192021222324252627282930
O G G G G #----- O O G G #---- O O G G G A #------------- or maybe
G G G G #------------ O G G G G A A A #----------- O G G G or maybe
#-- O G G G G #-----------G G L L L L L L L L L L L L L L L L
O=Operational Day Off
G=Guaranteed Day Off
A=Available Reserve Day
L = Leave

QOL: QOL is up to you. One of the deciding factors for me about joining Cathay was a CX Captain who told me in his entire career he never for a second not even during SARS had concerns of being furloughed or job security.

Training: Difficult, Think-British Military, Learn to Say OIC as in Oh, I see!

Disclaimer: I have been offered a job by CX and start later this year as an FO on the 744F in JFK. Everything I know is second hand information.

How commutable is it? I doubt there are jumpseat agreements but can you do ZED fares? Do many new hires get ORD based?

No official JS agreements. I have heard that JB and AT have allowed it on occasion, but definitely would not rely on that to get to work. Most commute on ZED tickets. ORD is not open to new hires is the latest I have heard. I guess that is a senior base as is ATL. Most likely to get JFK, LAX, ANC as DEFO.

ATL is a SENIOR base???? Man I sure would have thought it would have been on the bottom. I was really thinking of applying since I live here. I already have to commute to JFK for JB - Thanks Delta!! Great crews!

Cathay has a preferred port system that allows you to be based somewhere, but start your trips at another airport, when possible. Since the ATL flights go through DFW, all the Texas/southern guys request to be ATL based. That is why it is pretty senior.

Does anybody have a copy of "Handling The Big Jets", "Beyond Lion Rock" or "Aerodynamics For Naval Aviators" that they would be interested in selling. PM me if you have any of these that you would like to sell. I am also looking for a copy of a fairly current inflight magazine from Cathay Pacific, "Discovery"

Thanks in advance!

I wasn't aware that we have very many Texas/Southern USA guys flying for us. I have only flown with 1, and know of 1 other.

I didn't mean it to sound like there are a lot of US Southerners at Cathay, but my post does and I can't edit that anymore. What I meant was, with the preferred port system ATL becomes a more popular base than it otherwise would be.

I stand by my original disclaimer

Mine aren't up for sale but Aero is only 15 bucks at pilotmall: http://www.pilotmall.com/page/1/CTGY/library_aerodynamics

Keep checking ebay for Big Jets; I managed to get a brandnew copy for $75. There's about 28 listings right now.

Best of luck!

Thanks. I saw all the listing on Ebay and they are in the $150 - $300 "buy it now" price range. Must be a pretty rare book?

ATL is not that senior. A friend of mine just got ATL right out of the initial conversion course and ATL is expanding.

Center - There are actually have quite a few southerners working for Cathay. One lives in Miami and has been know to tie on a few, one lives in Texas and has a "Presidential" history, another is a new FO and lives in Orlando. Another is from Denmark and lives north of Dallas, I'm was from Texas and recently moved to San Diego recently. I know of at least 3 more guys interviewing that are all from south of I-20.

B-You seem like a nice guy, but this was too funny not to point out.

Yea, that was pretty bad. Too late to edit. Sometimes I truly am a dork truly.

Thanks for the offer MED!!. Do they quiz you on 747 systems if you aren't typed or experienced in the aircraft? Between "Beyond Red Lion", "Handling the Big Jets", "Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators" and all of the gouge, I think I already have my hands full of study material.

I just found my Handling the Big Jet book,,,make me an offer. I just found out that I'm not going to be needing it anymore. My file is not to be reviewed again by CX.Hmmmmm, what the $%^& did I do wrong?

Bjammin--Is the guy from Orlando a former TWA type? We had (too many) beers at Dan Ryan's in HKG last year... :eek: TC

Na, he was a captain at Pinnacle for over three years, had 5000TT, and was only 25 years old when he joined! Talk about a motivated flyer!

We do have a bunch of TWA guys and I know many that joined last year.

Naw, we've all done it before.

Are you the same Prowler guy who did the 'mock' interview at the LAX Air Inc conference?

If you're talking about the one in Apr of 2004, Yep, that me!

When hired at CX, is employment on a contract basis, or 'permanent'? Thanks!

Permanent. CX is not a contract job and all pilots are on one seniority list.

On the application it asks about the ATPL. Is this the ICAO version of the ATP? Is my ATP synonymous with the ATPL? If not, how do I make the conversion? Thanks
