I read on APC that a new pay scale went into effect recently for newhires. What exactly was cut? How "bad" is it, and how long until it increases?

The new payscales (Cos 08) actually pay slightly more during the first few years, but less later on than the old payscale (Cos 99).
For example, those of us who joined on the freighter before Jan 08 have payscales something like
Year 1-65000
Year 2-71000
Year 3-77000
After Year 3, we can choose to go to the passenger fleet. Year 4 passenger FO is around 116000, so quite a jump.
I don't remember the COS 08 payscales offhand, but if you have two FOs (one on COS 99 and the other on COS 08) and they both stay as FOs until they can hold passenger captain (about 10 years right now), COS 08 pays about $40000 less over the 10 year period. However, if a COS 08 guy takes an early freighter command (assuming the option is still available) after 3 or 4 years, he will actually make slightly more than the Cos 99 guys who does the same.

First year pay on the new COS 08 for a DEFO based in the US is about 105K first year.

Base pay + 15.5 % base salary paid in cash + Perdiem + Flight/Duty pay.

Works out to 105K. No Health insurance premiums, no co pays, uniform paid for.
