 Went on a organ retrievel run last night from koma-kmkc. When we left oma one of the doctors pulled me aside and asked if we could get a b-day cake for the chief surgeon and a seafood tray instead of the box lunch. At Mkc the gal at executive beech starts calling around for us but all of the grocery store bakery's are closed. So she calls the caterer that usually delivers to mkc. We usually get the doctors a box lunch for the return trip, for five people the bill is about 120.00 dollars. The rep at beech ordered a seafood, cheese and veggie tray and a cake. Later on I go to pay the bill and its over 600.00 dollars. My captain and I instantly start laughing. I was expecting it be 200 or 300. With the exception of organ runs, Capt and I never see the catering bill so we were both a little shocked. Is this normal? What's the biggest catering bill you've had?

I've seen $85.00 for 4 bagels and warm cream cheese before.
They must have been FAA approved bagels

Try Signature Flight Support (LAS).. Was always pretty comical when we ordered catering for 6 or 7 pax.

You pay $600 for something that a few short hours is converted into a smelly log.
You should realize that that is typical for anything to do with aviation, although the feedback is much quicker :D Most $$$ for an aviation career end up the same way.

Signature in LAS is terrible. I've waited an hour for ice there before, with numerous requests. They've failed to get a GPU in the same time period, or other requests. They're expensive, frequently rude or just ignorant of customer needs, and I go out of my way to avoid them.

thats wild. never anything but great service at Signature LAS....

That's not out of line for many caterers. I've had catering bills as large as $3000 or so. Had one that was a 90 minute flight with 4 people. They ordered Filet Mignon for 4, shrimp and crab legs for 4, a large ice cream cake for 4(on dry ice), 2 bottles of Grey Goose, 2 bottles of Wild Turkey, 2 bottles of Johnnie Walker Black, 2 bottles of Dom, several bottles of various red and white wines, plus a few other things I don't specifically recall. The catering bill was about $2500. They didn't touch any of the food except for the ice cream cake(since we didn't take the dry ice, they had to eat it right away or it would melt) and only drank a bottle of Dom and about 1/4 bottle of Grey Goose. We ate good that night...so did the line guys...and the girls at the FBO desk... The next day was my go-home day, and we were ending up 90 miles from my house, so I got a rental car to go home instead of airlines...and I took all the unopened liquor home and stocked my liquor cabinet. The JWB and Dom have not even been opened yet...and this was 4 years ago.

Extremes

Cheese tray for four, Telluride, $480.
Box lunches for six, Clinton-Sherman, $36 (Made McDonalds look gourmet)
Tank of Jet-A, Executive Las Vegas, $4.20/gallon.

Look on the chief pilot's face....PRICELESS!

2000Flyer

BTW - Cheese tray at Telluride, told the caterer they could keep it.
Box lunches at Clinton-Sherman, told them we'd never do catering there again. And the Jet-A at Vegas, used Western Petroleum for $2.76/g.

Geez, maybe this is my next business! Those prices are insane. (figuring out a way to do this from my home! :) )

How long does it take them to get the catering to you? I can see how there would be a real business in this. There is a place here in PHX called Delicious Deliveries. Not sure if they are everywhere, but you can order from all these restuarants. At least it would be good tasting food!!

They will deliver it to you. Is there any restriction of you walking outside the FBO and taking delivery of the food? Any FAA regulations about that?

I guarantee you - a few times of that happening and the prices for your food would go way down.

I had a $900 seafood tray out of MKC a few years ago. Lobster tails, crab claws, shrimp and crab dip as I recall. Company SVP asked for "some good seafood for the way home" so we made it happen. The irony is that we live on the East Coast a stones' throw away from the ocean - and you want Seafood catering from KC???!!!!!! It is not mine to question, just to provide.

After my ex-girlfriend and I had been together for about a year, and she heard all these stories about the price of catering....she opened her own catering service. It went very well, she ran it for a few years, then one of the bigger companies offered to buy it.....for an absolutely outrageous sum of money.....so, she sold it....and I got NOTHING! Well, we had been split up for a year or so at that point...oh well.
