I'm thinking about buying one of those portable "spare air" bottles for SCUBA diving.

The TSA requires you to drain them completely, and unscrew the top so it can be visually inspected inside.

I realize that you are supposed to keep a little bit of air pressure inside all the time to keep water out from rusting the inside of the bottle.

Has anyone had experience with taking scuba bottles on trips?

Tanks must be unpressurized, otherwise they're considered dangerous goods.
Penalty for the airline (disclosure) and you.
Tanks won't corrode in a few hours.
