I just got the cleared to train email today, time to upgrade is obviously a part of the decision. Someone posted this here a while back and I reposted it below.

Just checked the ALPA site and it shows about 3000 age 60 retirements by 2018. There are 548 in 2018 alone. Here is the list that shows retirements each year at Delta through 2036.
2007 21
2008 61
2009 75
2010 89
2011 133
2012 158
2013 218
2014 273
2015 348
2016 483
2017 571
2018 548
2019 543
2020 470
2021 419
2022 319
2023 308
2024 306
2025 325
2026 297
2027 228
2028 203
2029 134
2030 92
2031 87
2032 47
2033 28
2034 16
2035 7
2036 1

With those numbers should be about 55% by 2018 with NO additional growth and around 45% if they grow back up to around 9000. I really don't think you will be an FO for ten years unless you choose to be for QOL reasons.

Beernutz,

Thanks for the good info. However, as you pointed out, that's age 60 retirement. I think we can all agree that age 65 will happen eventually, which will obviously skew the numbers significantly to the right.

Lumberg, I see what you're saying, but it doesn't just come down to the math. Look at CAL. The simple mathematics never would have predicted upgrades in 1.5 years, but they've just had a vacancy (or AE, whatever you want to call it) that saw the most junior EWR 737 CA go to a 2005 hire. The math doesn't make sense, but the more senior guys just aren't bidding for it. It's certainly possible that the same thing won't happen at DAL, but it's also possible that it will.

I never knew that about CAL....you are probably right about it may happen.....color me sorry..

Where are you getting this information? I think your way off there guy! I am in my 8th year and I am not close to an upgrade! Now if you consider 88F/O to 767ER F/O your upgrade, then they are fast and furious! I think on this last AE rfesult the lowest Captain award was around 4500 or so! As far as checking the computer and seeing that only 15 people seniorto you have a bid for NYC 88Capt, that is misleading! Hundreds and hundreds more may not have anything in the computer, they wait for the AE to comeout, then they take a look at it and then put their bid preference in! Sorry but thats what is happening here!

99 hires can now hold NYC MD88 Capt. He is correct. Some 98 hires are close to ATL MD88 Capt too. Just remember that we had 5 years of negative growth thanks to 9-11 and the resulting parking of many airplanes. Had none of that happened, everyone would have upgraded sooner. There were 2nd year guys flying Capt on the 732 in MCO too.

Bye Bye--General Lee

thanks to expedia, travelocity, cheap tickets and us. 9/11 was just a catalyst.

That is true, and also Orbitz. We actually owned a piece of Orbitz with a few other airlines, and they had their own board of directors etc. When the other websites started finding lower fares, we (the airlines that owned the shares of Orbitz) actually had to give Orbitz a bunch of lower fares just to compete, which hurt us even more. Ridiculous indeed. That is why Delta is expanding to new INTL cities, with less competition and a chance at more revenue and profit.

Also, I don't think the FED will allow our economy to really go down the tube. Rate cuts are probably on the way, and things will settle down.

Unless of course it turns out that cheap money was what got us into this fix in the first place. Wouldn't that be something?
