Car hits plane at TEB?

Heard on the news this morning that a car lost control on 1&9 by teb airport and slammed into a jet waiting to takeoff.

I'm sure they will figure out somehow it's the pilots fault.

Probable cause as follow:

Pilot's failure to see and avoid traffic.

Pilot's failure to anticipate and judge motorist's lack of directional control.

Pilot's failure to yield to motorist's right-of-way.

it'll all come down to whether or not the car was in the landing phase or not.

We'll probably see a new rule as to who has the right of way...

It is interesting that this thread is on here today. My Son asked me about flying vs. driving statistics. I know they are out there somewhere, but I could not find them anywhere I looked. Could anybody help me out? Thanks.

I've been told by an insurance company that General Aviation has about the same accident rate as motorcycle, boating, etc....

We are "lucky" enough to fly into TEB twice a day Mon-Fri. I know that it wasn't our airplane. Hope there were no injuries... I imagine they were departing 24 this morning - being that it is right up against the fence!

Got that call from my Director of Maintenance this morning.... here's the info I got:

Fully fueled Lear 55 at First Aviation in TEB. Woman fell asleep while driving down Industrial Ave, went through a chainlink fence, hit the Lear and actually MOVED IT 15 FEET!!! No idea how fast she was going, but I was told that the aircraft remained intact (not leaking any fuel). I'd love to hear the call to Allstate:

"Does my $500 deductible apply to the $350,000 of damage?"

This is all second-hand and I have not read anything official.

There's something fishy about this story, it's tough to fall asleep at the wheel and even tougher to punch through a chain link fence and tougher still (but freaking GLORIOUS!) to actually damage a jet after falling asleep and punching through a fence. Our friendly neighborhood airports need some more elbow room than we're giving them.

No, it was a Lear. And it has the impression of a automobile.

Asleep... . More like doing her make-up, taking on a cell phone, smoking a cigerette, drinking coffee, tuning the radio and all while trying to change lanes (without a signal).

I talked to our pilots that were there when it happened, and the reports they got were that the 18 yr old girl passed out or something to that fact, and she went right through the fence and into the Lear.

Years ago while working up in maine we got a call from a guy.

"You the owners of a 210?"
Yes
Ummm my car just hit your plane
How could your car hit our plane? It's in the hanger
So is my car.

Well turns out this guy was renting one of our 172's and started his '83 oldsmobile to warm it up in the winter while he's pushing the 172 in. The thing slips out of gear goes round and round and ends up hitting the plane. Smashing into the wing and engine and banging the the tail into the hanger.

Did a ton of damage.

In the end the guy had Dairyland Insurance.

Getting money out of them was real tough. I think we bankrupted the company.
