My family and I are staying in Chatham on Cape Cod next week. My daughter and I will be flying over (From KHFD to Chatham Muni) tommorow morning (In our C-170A). This will be the first time I have been to the Cape.

I am sure that as the week goes on, we will be doing some site-seeing flights around the Cape.

I have been researching the Cape, on-line, AFG, etc.

I was just wondering of any of you have any suggestions for flying around that area. Places to avoid? Places to not miss? etc.

TIA
Rich

Do you already have reservations for lodging? Gets pretty crowded in summer. Try ACK and MVY for day trips.

Avoid the retricted area just north of Otis.

The Cape Cod seashore can be scenic, although lately its been so dang hazy that its difficult to appreciate the scenery.

I wouldn't bother trying to eat at the restaurant on the field at CQX. The food is ok, but the service is slower than molasses and it is extrememly tight quarters.

On the way, you might want to plan your route to fly over the Newport area and do a little sightseeing over the mansions....just watch out for the Met life blimp if the Women's Open is still going and you might want to tune into Newport CTAF (122.8) to monitor any traffic in the area.

Definitly plan on a day trip to Katama, grass strip on south beach at MVY! Go say hi to Mike, owner of the vintage Waco. Great dude.

Provincetown (KPVC) is a fun airport, great views. A lot of lighthouses to see. It kind of freaked me out to see all that water from the air though (land-locked westerner by birth)--gave me a sense of my own "nothingness."

I'll take flying over mountains any day. Cool trip though.

CVSFly: Yes, we do have accomidations.

McFly737: We have been to Katama once before. We may stop by for lunch before going over to the Cape.

Goose: Thanks for the info about KPVC. Might have to check that out.

Everybody: What about Whale watching form the airplane? We used to do it in Southern Cal. But what about off of Cape Cod? We used to just look for a "crescent" of tour boats, then circle above them. More often than not, a whale would appear inside the crescent.

The airspace will be really busy this weekend (July 4th). Its not really a good weekend to be circling around the cape.
