Is there any groups out there that do the same flying type missions of the CAP and CG that don't require you to play "soldier" ? I'd like to volunteer my time and skills for something like this but do not want to wear a uniform and play "army guy". Plus the CAP people I've observed and come into contact with make me scratch my head, especially in a flying related environment.

I went to a couple CAP meetings a few years ago and playing "soldier", etc, did not impress or excite me so needless to say I never joined. I think it takes a certain person to want to join and stay, I was just not one of them.. I have been looking for awhile into giving back to a good cause or organization. I was just unable to find any organization or charity work in this industry that overly excited me so I finally decided to start up a flying foundation for younger, neglected, and abused kids from the poor inner city neighborhoods who probably would never have had the opportunity to experience the joy and excitement of flight if it wasn't for this foundation. Most of the larger companies that are funding this have no problem(s) at all since they know it is for a good cause and they are a small (but important) part of the equation to bring a smile to a young child's face even if it is just an hour every week. Possibly something along these lines may be of interest to you... I can't think of a better way to "donate" time than doing this to make some young person happy.

Have you thought about something like Angelflight or Young Eagles? I don't know the requirements to join either, but both organizations provide a good oppertunity to give back to the community through flying.

350, That's a good idea. Are you in the Houston area? Maybe something I'd like to help you with.

na265,

I am no longer in the Houston area although one day I would really like to get something started down there. That city was very good to me and I surely would like to give a little back to the underprivileged kids of that community when time permits. I would be more than happy to work with you on this one at the appropriate time should this be something that still interests you.

groundpointsix has a good suggestion. When I used to own an airplane, I did alot of Angelflight missions and flew lots of Young Eagles. Both are great organizations and you don't have to own or even rent an airplane to become involved. You'll probably get as much out of the experience, if not more, than those you would be helping. And you don't have to wear a uniform to participate :o
