one big thing is read a little about radio procedures before you go. christ. i felt like a student pilot again. it was pretty bad.
also, and i just hope someone else has noticed, canadians are really radio-happy. they just love to talk on the radio. the guys working unicom give out field advisories, ask eta's, destinations...it's kind of annoying.
have a blast. beautiful country up there. several decent looking girls if you go to the right place.
Canpass works great!! Just give them two hours notice and call before you exit the airplane. (Most FBO's will give you a phone).
Also - once you call Canpass they will have the names and b-dates you provided attached to your N-number for ever (so you don't have to ramble them every time you go)
CANPASS is used, but not all the time. I just cleared and had to meet with a breathing individual.
I've never had one problem with Canadian Customs (can't say the same for U.S.) but this guy was a real treat. First, CANPASS recorded the wrong arrival time. When I called them they told me I was 1:15 early. I informed the officer I was actually :45 late. He proceeded to tell me that "an officer had been waiting for me the entire time and I was to call him immediately". I talked to the FBO and NO officer was ever there waiting. Anyway, after a 20 minute wait for the officer to show, I stepped off the aircraft to greet him, offering a hand shake as I always do. By the look on this guys face, you'd think I'd offered him a handfull of crap. It went downhill from there, complete with lectures to myself and my passengers.
I honestly feel this was an isolated incident. I deal with Canandian customs and CANPASS yearly and this is the first problem I've ever encountered.
