I had no problem using a ZED ticket on Qantas SYD-MEL and MEL-LAX. You have to buy the ZED or ID90 tickets through your employer before you head out there and then list yourself on the "Aussie carrier" separately.

I will have to check if I can get id90's through work.
I am sure I can't get zed fares b/c I have not heard that term before.

A ZED (Zonal Employee Discount) ticket is similar to an ID90, but usually cheaper. The price is based on distance, not 10% of the Y-fare.

Once in SYD I just bought tickets on Virgin Blue.
Cheap, space positive and very good service. Seemed to me it was worth it not to hassle with the standby deal. They have very liberal excess baggage rules too.
