Can I get my IGI?

I'm currently a 20 year old private pilot currently working on my instrument rating. I just took my instrument written, and my CFII written last week and passed both of them with a 90% and 92% respectively. I just found out today that the IGI test is identical to the CFII written. I figure that I might as well get the IGI so I can have one more thing to add to my resume and I should do it now because the information is still fresh in my head.

So being that I'm only a private pilot, if I take the IGI written, and the FOI (fundamentals of instructing) test, can I get my instrument ground instructor rating? Thanks

I think once you pass the FOI and IGI, you just take an 8710 to the FSDO...can't remember how that works though..

I'd get it...I'm thinking about studying for the AGI in case I qualify for the gold seal thing some day on the CFI certificate...

For one thing, drop the "only" business. You are a pilot. Having said that, one does not have to be a pilot to be a ground instructor. Take the IGI and FOI writtens, and take them and a completed 8710 to FSDO, and you will be issued a Ground Instructor Temporary with instrument rating.

As far as the AGI goes, the Commercial, CFI-A and AGI writtens are all drawn from the same question pool. So, after you take the Commercial written, knock out the the other two. The same application process applies as above to update your ground instructor certificate.

So there aren't any ATP questions on the AGI written? If so, then I might just be taking that one soon...got the FOI (a joke) done and the FIA (a glorified commercial written) done...

Nope. None. The AGI written will be very similar to the FIA written. You won't have any trouble with it.

Thanks for the help guys. I also noticed that once I take the FOI test for my IGI, that I wont need to take it again for my AGI, or CFI.

So as I understand it, with my IGI certificate I can train and endorse people to take the instrument written?

Absolutely. Just bring your instructor certificate to FSDO when you apply for your ground instructor certificate.

Yes. You can teach instrument ground school and sign off people to take the instrument written.

14 CFR 61.215 sets forth privileges and limitations for holders of ground instructor certificates:

Sec. 61.215 - Ground instructor privileges.

(a) A person who holds a basic ground instructor rating is authorized to provide:

(1) Ground training in the aeronautical knowledge areas required for the issuance of a recreational pilot certificate, private pilot certificate, or associated ratings under this part;

(2) Ground training required for a recreational pilot and private pilot flight review; and

(3) A recommendation for a knowledge test required for the issuance of a recreational pilot certificate or private pilot certificate under this part.

(b) A person who holds an advanced ground instructor rating is authorized to provide:

(1) Ground training in the aeronautical knowledge areas required for the issuance of any certificate or rating under this part;

(2) Ground training required for any flight review; and

(3) A recommendation for a knowledge test required for the issuance of any certificate under this part.

(c) A person who holds an instrument ground instructor rating is authorized to provide:

(1) Ground training in the aeronautical knowledge areas required for the issuance of an instrument rating under this part;

(2) Ground training required for an instrument proficiency check; and

(3) A recommendation for a knowledge test required for the issuance of an instrument rating under this part.

(d) A person who holds a ground instructor certificate is authorized, within the limitations of the ratings on the ground instructor certificate, to endorse the logbook or other training record of a person to whom the holder has provided the training or recommendation specified in paragraphs (a) through (c) of this section.

I took the IFR CFII and IGI written test at the same time and each test had about 80% the same questions. I passed them all with a 90% or better. Take the IGI well you still have the info still in your head.

Now im getting ready for the Commercial written, what test pull from the same Q&A's

I found the FIA to be verry similar (CFI Written) ... maybe a few more aerodynamics questions and endorsements (regs) but all in all a similar test...aparently the AGI is the same way...so I think I'm going to try to knock that one out within the next week or two...
