How many resumes and how many voice mails do you leave before you just give up at a place? Is it normal to hear nothing at all or is that just an impolite brush-off? Why is this job so fun but the industry so frustrating?

well i think you could open a big can of worms with this subject but....

personally,

i send out resumes to those that i think i would like to fly for. each month on my days off i update my logbook and resume then send each a faxed resume with a cover letter that indicates its just an update............... does this get me lots of calls? nope .......but it shows to most that i am still looking......... every once in a while i get a critic who says that i should be a professional pilot not a professional resume sender.......... to that i answer with respect of course.......well if you would hire me to prove i am a proffessional pilot i would not have to be a professional resume writer..................... i usually get 1 phone call to every 50 resume's sent out ...........i am hoping with the environment improving i will start getting more and then of course over the last three years maybe 3 interview invites.......... as far as why it is so hard ..................... people base too much weight on hours.............. we know that airline guys when workin average over 1000 hrs a year so ....they promise to stay at whoever hires them for less money (no i dont blame them, i would do the same if i were unemployed) so the talent pool is overblown with highly qualified folks......keep in mind that alot of the jobs in charter and corporate where once held by airline guys before they went to the airlines and of course they still know folks at these places................. hope this does not open me to flame bait but just my thoughts on the subject...................... oh and dont forget never take a job that people are willing to pay to do........

It's very normal to feel like every resume you send is being thrown into a circular file, cause they probably are. These opperators are receiving so many of these things that you have to do more than just send a resume...especially if you've got minimum hours (like myself). If it's a job you qualify for and truely want, call call call, visit, call, etc... The calling and visiting shows that you are very interested and really want the job, if you don't annoy the piss out of them, they'll take it as drive and motivation. The resumes will just keep going in the pile untill they are desparate, then the "Best" resume comes out, not yours. Be present, make sure they know you want it bad. This approach is how I was told by some friends (who were hired) and used my me (hired as well). Good Luck and keep it up.

VISIT & BRIBE(donuts-AM or sandwiches-NOON) and insert resume with. Be sure to pay off secretary(gatekeeper)with a 'goody bag' too. Interview response 33%(within 6mos). It's ashame it has come to this but whatever works.
