Is there any truth that CAL is looking to open up a west coast base? If so, what city is the front runner and when do they expect it to happen? Thanks.

They already have a base out west. It's called Guam.
 
Actually GUM is across the dateline which makes it the eastern most crew base! But I know what you mean. Watch out for the brown snakes!

you could spend the rest of your life there and never see one...they have a pretty good handle on the snake infestation these days.

True, the old airport used to have a sign welcoming you to Guam, and additionally, it said below that, "Where America's day begins".
