I was in a similar situation a month ago. After Indy Air shut down, I interviewed at JB and got the job. Two weeks prior to me going to class at JB, I got the call from Kim D. at FedEx for an interview. Since I was waiting and still unemployed, I was able to interview at FedEx a week later (1 week prior to JB class.) I waited 3 weeks 6 days while in ground school for the GREAT news from FedEx and am now an offical poolie.

For me it is an easy decision, I will leave JB to attend a FedEx class when ever I get the call to do so. I think your friend should interview at FedEx now while he has the opportunity (you just never know if he will get the chance to interview again at FedEx.) Tell him go to CAL class and if/when he gets the pool letter, then make the decision. Having both opportunites now plays out to be an important point in his career, and he should not let one go by without exploring all possible outcomes.

Just my $.02

Mini Ditka vs. the rest of the NFL, who would win?

These comparison threads reminds me of that Saturday Night Live skit.

DA Bears!

No kidding. Usually the companies are apples and oranges. JB, Fedex, CAL ... they're all great companies but couldn't be more different. The answer is always in one's heart (or in Yoda .. in one's heart, the answer lies.)

The one thing that I do not like about FDX are the bases (Memphis). I have spent some time there and it's disgusting. Lot's of garbage from the ghetto and gangbanger thugs all around. Then when you go way away from the airport, there really isn't that much. Some rednecks and Mississippi white trash to deal with too. Not to mention how much I hate Elvis.

You have some more options for living in domicile at CAL. Based in Newark you can pretty much drive from CT, NY, NJ, and PA. Lots of choices there.

With Houston, you have lot's of choices on nice suburbs, and a much nicer city with much more to do. I think you get the best bang for your buck in Houston over almost any area in the USA. It's super affordable, and nice with lot's of things to do. No state income tax either.

However, I would probably still take FDX. That's coming from someone who flys at CAL.

Seahorse is absolutely correct...I am sure Newark just rocks as a domicile!!! Also, there are reasons Houston is super affordable. Even the Oilers (now Titans) didn't want to stay there.

Just got the call from memtrash wanting me to put some input into this thread....sorry i was enjoying a nice layover in RNO...this thread is premature...wait until he interviews at fedex and gets offered the job..in the meantime start at CAL...if FDX offers a classdate ..then decide...if CAL is what u like then you have a great job...if FDX is what u want then u can go there...good decisions to have..good luck jman...

Milk toast! What you said is a given.
I was looking for input assuming he gets the FedEx offer and he is at CAL flying the line. He better get the job of course he's been drinking/celebrating since he got the class date from CAL. Maybe he should apply at AWA. :')

Read what I said you idiot. From Newark, you can drive to four different States within about 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours. New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania. I guess all four of those states suck huh? You idiot.

Wow, It takes 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours to drive to New Jersey from Newark?
Yea that RockyTopFlyer is an idiot!

Read through the lines you idiot. I'm talking about good places to live in NJ. The 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours I quoted was a maximum. Obviously you miss my point. My point being that you have the entire tri-state area to choose from. Where in Memphis, although it may be cheap, you've got gangbanger scum mixed in with hillbilly rednecks all around you. Yes, you may have Arkansas, Miss, and TN, but there is nothing to do.

ok. truce. no more use of the word 'idiot' on this thread.

go outside. it's a nice day.

some would choose FedEx, some would choose CAL. let's leave it at that.

I have a few screens--

1) I would look at both companies like an investor. Debt, liquidity, obligations (lease, retirement payouts to employees, retirement of old airplanes), competitors, hiring (growth and retirements), barriers to entry and operating costs. Not necessarily in that order.

2) Quality and style of management. Is the management competent and trustworthy? Do they pay themselves huge sums and crush the average employee? I would, for example, find UPS to be an extremely stable and secure place to work. But I would be in for a culture shock. They are old school labor vs. management. Think military mindset. I hear FedEx is better than UPS there, but you already have a good fix on that if you talk with your sponsor.

3) Pay

The fourth thing I would look at, if the above were equal, is domicile. And it is a very distant fourth. The exception is if the job is a hard commute.

If you live near and work near a SWA city commuting should be a breeze. I don't know how the commute is on anyone else.

Yes, all four of those states do suck. Congratulations!, in your first sentence you managed to mention the one place that's a bigger $hithole than Memphis. It takes a lot of work to seek out the one place that's a bigger $hithole than Memphis, but Newark takes the prize, it is indeed the bunghole of the universe.

Again, Congratulations!

well..the gentleman in question is in his mid forties!....he will spend most of what is left of his career in widebodies in that payscale at FDX....that is a big deal!...who cares where u live? u can live anywhere with FDX and company jumpseating to trips is protected under the contract...he probably will not make widebody CPT at CAL in his time frame...but he will at FDX easily...but i am a little biased....good luck jman

And Congratulations to you for being a stupid redneck memphis hillbilly for that comment. Yes, the entire tri-state area - Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania are all horrible states???? Why do more people live there than any other area in the USA you stupid redneck? Very very educated and smart comment. That really makes a lot of sense. If that's so, please tell me where the best place to live is??!!

You missed my point anyway. It's not about what place is better to live. It's about domicile and living options. You have MORE domicile and living choices at CAL. You have EWR which allows you to live in the four states of CT, NY, NJ, and PA within 1 hr of driving. You have Houston, the 4th biggest city in the US. You have Cleveland. You also have Guam, if you want to live there or some nearby island in the Pacific.

I am not going to debate which city/state is better, blah blah blah. My point is that you have more domicile options with CAL. Yes, you can be a widebody CA at FDX and make more money, but you still have to commute from MEM. There is no living at home doing 1-day trips. We all know that you can commute at any airline. I am talking about having the option to live in domicile and not commute by air.

Just because a lot of people live there doesn't mean its a good place to live.
Many people live in china and prison and I bet those places aren't that sweet.
Maybe the people in the area don't have the option of leaving.

FDX has domiciles in LAX, ANC, MEM, and Subic. We also have major hubs at OAK, EWR, and IND. Future hub at Greensboro, with the possibility of IND or GSO domiciles down the road. Another possible domicile opening in Europe.

I like Pennsylvania.

Don't forget my favorite hub, AFW!

I see NJ is only one hour from Newark sounds good. I think you are the second guy to say that so it must be true.
FedEx buys me tickets on your and other airlines when I go to work. First class if the flight is over 4 hours. I eat, drink, and sleep my way to work on FedEx's dime. And, I live in Texas and Houston sucks and smells bad, and we all know Newark does too. CLE and Guam sound OK but, I'd rather earn frequent flyer miles on my way to work.

Ahhhh...an armpit man.

Maybe I should have said Western PA.

Maybe I am incorrect, but I thought it was FedEx's policy not to interview pilots employed at "Major" airlines. If you choose to go to Continental doesn't that remove your option to even interview at FedEx?

I was an active pilot at CAL when I was called for my interview at FDX in Jan. I'm swimming in the pool like a lot of others.
