I have to disagree, through you point has merit at other airlines. We have a frozen A-Fund, to which no more money is being added. Most early outs/normal retirements are taking their lump sum and leaving while the GATT rate is giving the biggest return on their lump sum. The possibility of BK and/or lowering of the GATT rate or a total loss of the A-Fund to the PBGC still exists for the foreseeable future. Anyone who doesn't see that is in denial. I don't think too many pilots would want to risk their lump sum simply for a few more years of flying.

I upgraded in may at XJT and one of the newhire FOs I flew with was a Early-retired IAH 737 captain at CAL. He took his lump sum in Late winter '05 and came to XJT to maintain bennies and "stay in the game". Great guy, Really a pleasure to fly with. I felt bad that he would have to talk to Samantha in Crew-scheduling for a while.;) He seemed quite content that he had made the right decision and I agreed..Good call. If you got the lump sum available...take it if your close.

Soooooo what do you think? 4-5 year upgrade for guys getting on today?

Of course IF, (what a big "if" in this business) all goes as planned.
