Item 1: SkyWest MOU and Career Protection
Monday, May 19, SkyWest Airlines and Continental Airlines announced a code-share agreement for turboprop flying in Houston. CAL ALPA and Continental Airlines are currently finalizing the language for an MOU about this flying.
However, last Friday, at the MEC Meeting in Houston, the CAL MEC unanimously (16-0-0) approved a resolution directing the CAL Negotiating Committee (in coordination with the CALEX NC) to complete bargaining for a Houston turboprop MOU. The MOU would permit IAH flying under the following conditions:
1. The flying is limited to EMB-120 aircraft.
2. The company will secure jobs for CAL/CALEX furloughed pilots equal to the number of pilots required to perform this flying.
3. No CALEX pilot will be furloughed as a result of this turboprop flying.
4. The MOU contain a =meet and agree=clause that applies to any further expansion of turboprop flying.
The MEC made this decision to:
1. Obtain jobs for furloughees when many pilots are on the street throughout the industry.
2. Protect existing jobs through a modified =93no furlough=94 provision.
3. Deliver some feed and revenue to the Continental system, thereby avoiding other cuts the company might take.
Note that the language of the MOU has not been finalized at this time. Your elected representatives will distribute more information once it is concluded and signed. If you have any questions or concerns about these issues, please contact your elected representative.
