After the first 6 months at CAL(when you become eligible for health insurance), what percentage of the insurance does CAL pay?

Thanks,
Skychief

There are many different options to choose from. After all the co pays and such are met I think it is 80% covered. Some plans offer 90%, but you will pay more per month. I pay $19 a month for a 1500 ded. with no perscription bennies. You can build your own plan at CAL. You choose the ded./co-pays/perscription co-pays/co insurance/etc. You also get a huge credit if you don't use tobacco products.

Thanks for the good info! Do you know what % of the monthly cost of the health insurance CAL pays? I guess what % of the monthy insurance rate? I think my employer now pays 50% of the premium.

Thanks,
Skychief

For the standard plans I am pretty sure it is 80%. Depending on if you build your own plan, I am not sure if you could figure it out or not. Bottom line it is at least 80% of the premium.

Again, thanks for all of the info...I'm trying to decide wheather or not to add myself on to my wife's health insurance ($117/month) and be locked in for a year or to just do the temporary insurance and then use the insurance CAL provides...if they cover 80%, then I think it is a no-brainer to do the temporary insurance....we'll see, I've still got to get more info on the temporary insurance before I make a decision.

Thanks,
Skychief

Here's some advice.

I researched all three of the CAL plans: Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and United Healthcare.

United Healthcare is VERY expensive. You do have more overall options, can go out of network, but you pay a lot more. I'm not just talking about monthly premiums, but also when you go and see a Doctor.

Aenta and Blue Cross Blue Shield are almost the same. Aetna is slightly cheaper per month. The plans are almost identical. Blue Cross might have a few more providers, but only by a very small margin.

Some advice on the build your own- I researched that too, and I found that the standard Aetna plan was the best for me.

On the temporary insurance, you are looking at anywhere from $400 - $700 for the entire 6 months, depending upon the deductible that you choose. I paid around $600.

By the way, it makes you feel good to know that you are now a MAJOR AIRLINE PILOT and the company doesn't even give a shiit about your health. "Taking care of each other" from the Go Forward Plan huh? You're left on your own for 6 months. It's a good thing that the scabs in the Union stealing money from all the pilots were thinking about getting Health Insurance from Day 1 to be put in the contract... NOT.

This is wayyyyy too funny. SeaWhore, who spends half his time on this board attacking AirTran, is whining about his very own airline being a snakepit of scabs and having lame-oh insurance. . . . heh-heh . . . . . "But it looks good on you, though" . . . .

Looks to me like you have your work cut out for you cleaning up the crap at your own carrier, SeaWhore, so don't waste your time over in the AirTran threads trying to remind us that 10 years ago we had a cargo fire, OK?

AMF!

You know she was a scab don't you critter?

On the temp insurance , I pay 110 a month for my wife and I. With a $2500 dollar deductible. My kids are under the state of MI health care program because we newhire FO's qualify and that is 5 dollars through the state with BCBS does not matter how many kids and 100% coverage. The temp for all 4 if I choose to get it would of been 170 dollars approximately.

For cal insurance its going to run me 353 for a family of 4 with BCBS, dental, vision, including non tabacco clause.

How sad is it that you work for a major airline, yet you need the state to help out with your kids healthcare! I'm not knocking you, but that is a tragic state of affairs. At RAH, I have an 80/20 plan, $1000 ded, which costs $140/month for the whole family - while not fantastic, I think it's a point of reference for mainliners. CAL is treating it's FO's worse than the regionals treat theirs, especially when they can certainly afford to do better than this.

critter- I got on here to help out another pilot with insurance issues. I'm sure he appreciates you hijacking this thread with your valujet bs. But I know that you get pissed when you fly into Newark or Houston and you're face to face with a CAL widebody. I just know you think of seahorse riding shotgun on the way to Amsterdam giving you the middle finger LOL :D

Well, we don't fly into IAH and I haven't seen any of your widebodies at Hobby. As for Newark, if you truly enjoy flying out of that "happy" place then maybe you've been hitting the hash bars too much on your layovers in Amsterdam. Vaarwel!!!

Some of us have moved beyond the "my plane is bigger than yours," and "I get to layover in exotic destinations," and have come to realize its not the size of the airplane that's important -- it's who you work for and how the treat their employees that really matter.

why do the new hire's have to put with no health bennies for 6 months? granted there are policies for new hires to seek but at this stage of the game this shouldnt be happening. Do any of you know if when its time for contract negotiaitons, will alpa change that?

Because they took the job.

It has to do with staying on par with the other employee groups at CAL. No one gets insurance for the first 6 months, except maybe Larry and his cronies. It still sucks but thats the way it is.

It has to change. We have lost good people because of this BS policy. Lets hope our new MEC can fix it with the next contract. We are professionals, unlike some other employee groups, and we deserve to be treated that way.
