What's the latest on the callsign debate? I know they are still using CACTUS on the west coast, and US Air on the east coast. When will it be decided which callsign is used?

It will remain as two different call signs until the America West operating certificate is finished being used, which will take another year or so. As to which one will prevail? Who knows. It's only a one page paperwork request with the FAA and IACO to change it so it's not like it's a big hassle. I'm sure it will be part of the negotiations with pilots & management as to which one stays.

I'd say staple all the US Airways guys below the AWA guys then use the "USAIR" callsign.

Or use date of hire and keep the callsign "catus"

An AWA ALPA guy told me he's optimistic that Cactus would end up being the winning callsign. We'll see.

I heard it was going to be CACTUSAIRWAYS, see how incorporates the entire two airline name-- kind of like TED with the United, heheh...

A lot of people seem to be passionate about the call sign. As long as I can keep my job, my base, and my pay, our call sign could be "Dog Poo" for all I care!!

I don't think anyone at US Airways has any real attachment to the call sign. It's pretty lame, and isn't even the name of the airline anymore (US Air). I think it would be an easy sell to keep the "cactus" call sign. Although I don't think it fits with the new US Airways as well as it did with America West.

Besides, switching to Cactus would eliminate the annoying habit of adding an "S" to the end of the US Air call sign.....i.e. "US Airs 450"....sounds really stupid if you ask me.

Don't be so sure. :D

I can totally picture it: "Aaaaaaaand, Boston Departure, it's Cactus's 441 outta two and a quarter for three...."

So the wouldn't that be Cacti 441?

I flew on a US Airways/America West A320 a couple of weeks back. The thing was brand spankin new. It was wierd because it had US airways paint on the outside, but the interior was America West.

Why would they do this? Doesn't it just confuse passengers?

"It was wierd because it had US airways paint on the outside, but the interior was America West."

My guess is that the interior is done/planned prior to the paint...also the exterior paint is likely a higher priority at this point.

The new ones with the nice leather seats throughout all have the AW logo embossed in the headrests...those will be around for a while. I'm curious to see when we get them with the flag symbol in the seats.

As an aside, the CP's office (D.D) told me "Cactus" would be the new callsign. Take it for what it's worth.

I just saw a AW/USAir A320 here at LAS it had AW engines and a USAir Tail and fuselage. A hybrid of sorts. Kind of cool looking.

ATC- " Dog Poo 871 turn right on Alfa 7 hold short of Runway 25R for departing traffic"
" Right on Alpha 7 holding at 25R, Dog Poo 871 "
