Ok, without making any excuses, I should know what cabotage is. The simple fact is that I do not and am wondering if any of you would enlighten me? I have seen it mentioned in a thread or two lately as something on the horizon. I am not even in the industry YET but am trying to learn all I can so I can sound at least somewhat competant in converstaion. I have read Hard Landing and been an industry follower (from the outside) for years but have never come across this term that I can remember. Thanks for the help, and for those that see fit, flame away! I can accept repsonsibility for my ignorance. Cheers!
 
Airline cabotage is basically air traffic that originates and departs within the boundaries of a given country flown by a carrier of another country.

i.e. British Airways flying point to point in the U.S.

This is related to the Open Skies deal that is coming.
 
Basically cabotage would be if British Airways were able to sell seats and fly from NY to LA.(or between any 2 points in the US) Right now, they can fly from another country into the US but not between US city pairs. (There is an exception if the NY to LA flight is a continuation of the original segment. They can fly from NY to LA but they are not allowed to take on new passengers in NY or sell tickets from NY to LA. All passengers had to originate from overseas)
 
I thought it was French for cabbage.

Yes, Ted Stevens (R-AK) allowed Alaska to get a special freight exemption. All the freight run through AK is just stopping in Anchorage to pick up other freight in other US cities and then flown on to a third US city.

Ted Stevens is the biggest aviation threat we currently have in government.

Please give an example of where the freight originated and the final destination. Explain how this is cabotage.:confused:

A better example would be QF. They use to carry LD7's on the freighters out of JFK/ORD and download them to a passenger flight in LAX. Somebody (FAA I am guessing) considered this to be cabotage and they got their knuckles whacked (Evergreen was flying the flights as ACMI this would have been mid 90's maybe).

I'm looking for an Alaska example that Sen. Stevens pushed through. What did it allow that was not allowed before?

As far as I am aware all the Asian carriers just do a tech stop there is no exchanging of freight between the aircraft. I am sure occassionally somebody takes a palllet off one freighter and puts on another but there is no massive transloading like NW/FX/5X do. If it is on the inbound side they won't even relist it on the new flight because of the problems with IT issuance and AMS filings, they will just move it as a free astray.

I push a fair amount of boxes both directions out of ANC and it rides out on the same flight in when a foreign flag is involved. If you find anything out that this has changed I would be interested in knowing about it. But I really don't think it would change the competition in ANC much. The foreign flags are going primarily to their Asian bases. You won't see SQ operating a freighter ANC-NRT because even if they could do it from the US side, the Japanese would sqaush it.
