I've noticed some airlines have the policy that the cabin window shades must be open for takeoff and landing. I suppose that's to make it safer in case of an evacuation. My airline, SkyWest, doesn't have that policy and many others don't. Which ones do?

You'll note on our (OO) new CRJ700 the window shades do not exist. Most of the other aircraft we have the exit window opens down (would fall open on impact).

On the CRJ, I know for a fact that we have to have the window shades open in the emergency exit aisle. The others don't matter. I have to make sure of this and it s*cks when Joe Buisness Traveler is trying to nap b/c he's been up all night, but oh well.

You might want to check. The AFM says no window shades at exit, forward and aft shade of exits open down. In PSP so can't confirm.

FYI the exit row shades open down because they can't go up (normal) because of the handle and the latch mechanism. Has nothing to do with an 'impact' opening the shade...

Every time I ride on CHQ I get the dumb a$$ FA wakn' me up to put my shade up right after the in range brief. So I sit there now wide awake for 20 minutes. If it's your airline policy, do it right and check on your final walk through. Oh well, it's a small price to pay for a free ride.

You guys think that's bad, I flew on a Delta MD-88 the other week where the window shade kept openeing itself up. It would go up! I pull it down, and up it went again... slooooowly. Creepy.

Its that Eastern Flight Engineer that haunts airplanes.

TOTALLY off subject, but is there a man in existence that doesn't like exchexflyer's avatar? A lot?

Window Shades Open

A lot of airlines have the window shades open policy "while on the ground" because that is where an emergency evacuation would take place. Even while the a/c is at the gate while boarding an emergency evac could be warranted (ie fuel, other a/c, etc).
