CA pilot commuters

A general question to any pilots out there that are based out of California but commute from another state.

Does California try to tax your pilot income even though you live in another state?

thank god I had a great Jag lawyer- that knew his soldier and sailor act rights and wrote a letter and tabled the issue-

I had a similar situation. Several years after moving out of state, I received a nice tax bill for all the years I did NOT live there. A month of frustration dealing with the bueracracy (sp?) finally got it cleared up. Also, the DMV kept demanding registration renewal fees and penalties and what not even though I was a good boy and notified every numb-nut government agency I was supposed to notify about movin' out-a-state. Definately a little frustrating. Probably would have been easier with a shark, Uh, lawyer , but I think I was just too darn stubborn.

Thanks for the replies. Just curious, it sounds like you lived there for a while. I was trying to find out if California has ever tried to go after taxes from someone who has never lived there, but was based out of there with their airline. Thanks.

Yup, born and raised in Cali. Moved away in my mid twenties. Anyways, I knew a guy who lived in Portland, Oregon & flew for Ameriflight out of Bakersfield, CA. (I think that's where he was based) He did have Cali income taxes with-held from his pay.
I don't know if he actually had to pay or if he got the money back. Cali is pretty hardcore for taxing part-time residents. A Crash pad qualifies a person as a part time resident according to the State Board of Equalization (The Cali IRS). They definately try to squeeze a nickel any which way they can.
