A Cessna Citation twin-engine jet on Friday crashed on departure from the San Fernando Valley airport, Federal Aviation Administration officials said.
Airport officials told FOX News that the remains of two individuals have been recovered at the scene. It's believed the two dead people were the pilots of the plane.
This type of plane typically carries four to eight passenger, plus the pilots.
The Los Angeles Sheriff's Office said it first got the call about the crash at 10:53 a.m. local time (1:53 p.m. EST). The crash was described as one of high impact.
Eyewitnesses said they heard a large 'boom,' then power briefly went out in the neighborhood on the north side of the airport near where the plane went down.
Local station KTTV talked to an eyewitness who said it looked liked the baggage compartment, located in the front of this type of plane, may have opened during takeoff.
The FAA reported the pilot radioed the air traffic control tower after takeoff, asking to come back to the airport.
Firefighters sprayed foam as the aircraft burned next to a road in a lot about three-quarters of a mile north of the suburban airport. The blaze was quickly put out. A nearby property was surrounded by parked cars. There appeared to be one car amid the wreckage.
The aircraft was flying to Long Beach, about 25 miles south of Los Angeles.
Van Nuys is the busiest general aviation airport in the nation, with an average of nearly 500,000 takeoffs and landings annually. The 730-acre facility is owned by the city's Los Angeles World Airports department and is used by private, corporate, charter, flight instruction and maintenance operations.
Does anybody know the tail Number?
